EL PASO, Texas (KTSM<\/a>) \u2013 In a unanimous decision, the El Paso City Council on Monday, April 13, directed city staff to begin drafting revisions to the city\u2019s zoning ordinance as part of an effort to deter the construction of new immigrant detention facilities within city limits.<\/p>\n

The council also voted to evaluate any other requirements under zoning laws that relate to distance to residences, setbacks, and the size of such facilities.<\/p>\n

Camp East Montana operates under new ICE contractor <\/a><\/p>\n

Council\u2019s vote Monday morning also directed city staff to have employees contact their supervisors if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement visits a city facility and to comply with federal grant assurances.<\/p>\n

Deputy City Manager Mario D\u2019Agostino said the city\u2019s authority remains limited when it comes to federal property, but changes to local codes could give El Paso more oversight on private land within city limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s a private company being run for the federal government and it\u2019s on private land, well then it does have to follow our local codes and procedures,\u201d D\u2019Agostino said. \u201cBut as far as federal property, we cannot put any restrictions on.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s action comes as concerns grow about the potential expansion of such facilities in the area.<\/p>\n

City council to discuss plan to \u2018prevent the installation\u2019 of ICE facilities in El Paso <\/a><\/p>\n

Details on the proposed zoning changes are expected to be developed and presented at a future council meeting.<\/p>\n
