Former TCU forward David Punch is transferring to the University of Texas.

Punch, the Horned Frogs’ leading scorer from last season, confirmed his decision Sunday on social media.

Punch averaged a team-high 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game, along with 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals, while helping the Horned Frogs reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Punch was voted honorable mention All-Big 12.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore entered the portal on April 9 and the Longhorns were one of the first teams linked with Punch’s recruitment.

The move to Austin also brings Punch closer to his hometown of Harker Heights, which is just over a hour away from Texas.

The Longhorns reached the Sweet 16 in coach Sean Miller’s first season and will likely enter next year as a preseason top-25 team with the addition of Punch and Colorado transfer guard Isaiah Johnson. Punch and Johnson are rated four-star transfer prospects by 247Sports.

Losing Punch to the portal was tough enough, but the decision to commit to an in-state rival will make it even tougher for TCU fans to stomach.

Despite Punch’s departure, TCU was successful in retaining most of its core from the tournament run with All-Big 12 forward Xavier Edmonds, sophomore forward Micah Robinson and guards Brock Harding and Tanner Toolson all announcing their intentions to return to Fort Worth next season.

The Horned Frogs are also bringing in junior college prospects Trent Lincoln and Ryan Hunt along with Serbian forward Milos Sojic. With seven scholarships allocated, TCU is aiming to bring in three to four more players to round out the rotation.
