Downtown Plano is offering a new way to experience its history, one that goes beyond plaques and timelines. The Once Upon a Plano walking tour introduces an immersive format that blends real historical events with creative storytelling, transforming familiar streets into a live, narrative-driven experience.<\/p>\n
Developed through a partnership with Mic Drop Comedy<\/a> and supported by a heritage grant, the tour brings together performance, local voices and place-based storytelling in the Downtown Plano Arts District.<\/p>\n A Different Way To Experience Local History<\/p>\n Rather than a traditional guided tour, Once Upon a Plano is built around eight original stories written by local contributors and tied to specific locations throughout downtown.<\/p>\n Each stop along the route introduces a new narrative, ranging from lighthearted moments to more atmospheric, haunting scenes, all grounded in real places and moments from Plano\u2019s past.<\/p>\n \u201cThis project showcases the Historic Downtown Plano Arts District in a new way,\u201d said Downtown Plano Manager Michelle Hawkins in an official statement. \u201cWe wanted to create something the community and visitors can enjoy year-round while building a stronger connection to the district.\u201d<\/p>\n Built By The Community, Performed Live<\/p>\n The stories featured in the tour were selected through a community writing contest, highlighting local talent and perspectives.<\/p>\n Writers whose work is included in the experience include Michael Brundy, James Gilbreath, John Brooks, Chisom Ogoke, Liam Mahagan, Katrina Miller, Carol Kyle and Mary Jacobs. Each piece is performed by professional actors, adding a theatrical layer that brings the stories to life as guests move through the district.<\/p>\n What To Expect On The Tour<\/p>\n The guided experience lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers about 1.6 miles through key areas of downtown Plano.<\/p>\n Stops include recognizable landmarks such as Haggard Park, the historic 15th Street corridor and areas along the rail line, offering a mix of open spaces and urban settings that help shape each story.<\/p>\n Because of the format, the experience feels less like a standard walking tour and more like a moving performance, with each location acting as a stage.<\/p>\n Once Upon a Plano tours are now open to the public and designed to run year-round.<\/p>\n Tours begin at Dirty Water Fly Co., located at 1012 E. 15th Street in downtown Plano.
