If you see a child left alone in a car, get help,” McCranie said. She added that heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash vehicle-related fatalities among children.

Even in relatively mild weather, vehicles can heat up quickly to dangerous levels. An outside temperature in the mid-60s can cause a vehicle’s inside temperature to rise above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and the inside temperature of a car can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes.

McCranie said children are more vulnerable to heatstroke than adults, and that risk factors can include routine changes or caregivers who are not used to driving with children. She also noted that “even great parents can forget a child in the back seat.”

TxDOT recommends several steps to help prevent a tragedy:

Look before you lock. McCranie suggested placing an item you will need at your destination — such as a purse, briefcase or phone — in the back seat as a reminder.Use reminders. Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in a child’s seat when it’s empty, then move it to the front seat when a child is in the back as a visual cue.Keep your vehicle locked and keep keys out of reach. Nearly three in 10 heatstroke deaths happen when an unattended child gains access to a vehicle.Take action. If you notice a child alone in a car, call 9-1-1.

McCranie also highlighted TxDOT’s litter prevention efforts, including the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off and the Adopt-a-Highway program.

RECOMMENDED: Community Conversations: New runaway truck ramp on Transmountain nears completion

“As part of the Don’t Mess With Texas campaign, Trash-Off is typically one day in April where volunteers come out and clean up, but this year – the whole month of April is a Trash Off,” McCranie said. She said the Trash-Off is part of TxDOT’s litter prevention program, which includes Adopt-a-Highway.

McCranie said the Adopt-a-Highway program began in 1985. Volunteer groups agree to pick up litter four times a year on a 2-mile stretch of state-maintained roadways for two years, and each group receives two blue signs recognizing its efforts.

In El Paso, 73 segments are adopted, according to McCranie. She said several segments are available throughout the El Paso District, including in “down country,” and that for El Paso, the majority of available segments are located in far East El Paso and south of I-10. To get involved, she said people can visit www.txdot.gov and search for Adopt-a-Highway.

TxDOT says litter on the road is unsightly and can be a safety hazard, and that litter prevention efforts can help safeguard the environment, create a clean and welcoming community, enhance community image, promote community involvement, save taxpayers dollars, build partnerships and improve community health.

Littering remains a significant issue statewide, with one in four Texans admitting to having littered in the past, according to the information shared in the segment. The most common forms of litter are food or organic material, cigarette butts and small pieces of paper such as receipts and gum wrappers.

TxDOT also reminded Texans that littering can bring fines of $500 each time someone litters. If what is tossed weighs more than five pounds, the fine can be up to $2,000. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and pay attention to volunteers who are out picking up trash through the month of April.

Sign up to receive the top interesting stories from in and around our community once daily in your inbox.

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — As temperatures begin to climb in El Paso, officials are urging drivers and…

[12
138,140,139
0":"post-249433","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-el-paso","8":"tag-el-paso","9":"tag-el-paso-headlines","10":"tag-el-paso-news
["GET
