The City of Richardson is recognizing Altrusa International of Richardson for its continued service to the community through its annual Kindness in Action Day, held April 11.<\/p>\n

Since 2016, Altrusa Richardson has hosted the event each spring with the goal of making Richardson \u201cthe kindest town around.\u201d The event brings together volunteers and community partners to complete service projects benefiting a variety of organizations.<\/p>\n

This year, volunteers gathered at Friends Place Adult Day Services to work on projects supporting groups such as the RISD Intake Center, Hope\u2019s Door New Beginning Center, Patriot PAWS Service Dogs, Blue Star Mothers of America, New Friends New Life, which assists women who have been trafficked, and Days for Girls, which is an international project providing resources to women in economically underdeveloped areas.<\/p>\n

Projects included assembling hygiene kits, preparing materials for reusable menstrual supply kits, creating birthday bags for families served by Hope\u2019s Door, building care packages for active-duty military members and making dog toys for service animals. Volunteers also created \u201cbusy bags\u201d for the RISD Intake Center to help children stay engaged while their families complete enrollment.<\/p>\n

Additional efforts included assembling housewarming items for youth transitioning out of foster care and preparing materials for distribution to other partner organizations.<\/p>\n

In addition to Kindness in Action Day, Altrusa Richardson provides ongoing support to City departments and local organizations, including the Richardson Public Library, Richardson ISD and Network of Community Ministries. The group also supports the Richardson Reads One Book program.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, Altrusa presented the City with a ceremonial check for $488,452, representing more than 14,040 hours of volunteer service contributed over the previous year.<\/p>\n

Altrusa\u2019s efforts are one example of the many ways residents give back during April, which is recognized by the City as the Month of Volunteerism. The designation, established by the City Council in 2012, highlights the role volunteers play in supporting City services, events and programs throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Residents interested in getting involved can find opportunities through the City\u2019s volunteer webpage at www.cor.net\/Volunteer<\/a>. Volunteers assist across Richardson in a variety of ways, including supporting public safety departments, helping at community events and working in facilities such as the Library and Animal Shelter.<\/p>\n
