Alvarado said the city is looking at “real-time digital handheld ticket riders” that would communicate with the parking meters to verify whether a vehicle has paid.

“Yeah, this parking vehicle paid for the space, so it doesn’t get a ticket at that point,” he said.

The proposal also includes license plate recognition technology.

Emily Schmalz reports on El Paso considers automated parking enforcement system to issue tickets (Credit: KFOX14)

RECOMMENDED: POLL: Should the City of El Paso use cameras to enforce parking meters?

“We’re also looking at adding license plate recognition, which will recognize the license plate to see if it has paid meter space,” Alvarado said.

He said the system would also be able to identify repeat offenders and would include fixed cameras to monitor busy areas at all times.

Ticket processing would also change. Currently, drivers have 14 days to pay or appeal a ticket. Under the new system, tickets would be mailed, giving drivers 21 days to respond.

Alvarado said the technology could eventually expand beyond the initial areas.

“So, once we get technology that they can utilize, it’ll definitely go citywide,” he said.

RECOMMENDED: El Paso City Council votes to hire consultants in Daniel Villegas civil rights lawsuit

How drivers pay for metered parking could also be updated.

Under the proposal, individual meters would be replaced with a single multi-space meter per area, while keeping payment options the same, including paying at the meter or through the Park 9-1-5 app.

Officials said installation could take up to two years.

Alvarado said the change would improve the look of city blocks.

“It’ll clean up the aesthetics of the block with less clutter,” he said.

He also said new meter technology would expand payment options: “With these new meter technology, we’ll have Apple Pay, Google Pay, Pay with your watch, a credit card, and any other monetary fee that we could use,” adding, “It’ll take coins as well.”

Some El Pasoans said they support the idea.

RECOMMENDED: El Paso airport launches AI-powered parking system with Metropolis partnership

One person said, “But I would say a pro would just be like maybe the officers have time to focus on other bigger jobs that they have to do.”

Another said, “I think that the automated would be better because it’s just a better use of the resources than the police can be used in other departments.”

Others said they want more information before supporting the proposal.

One person said, “We have, of course, to do more research and find out if it’s cost-effective, because we’re already paying a lot in taxes, as taxpayers.”

City officials said the presentation was only meant to introduce the idea, with more discussion and decisions still ahead.

Sign up to receive the top interesting stories from in and around our community once daily in your inbox.

EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso drivers could soon see major changes in how parking is enforced…

[12
138,140,139
post-250179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-el-paso","tag-el-paso","tag-el-paso-headlines","tag-el-paso-news
["GET
