LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – April is Autism Acceptance Month – and here in Lubbock, one organization is going beyond awareness, creating a space where people can feel seen, supported, and valued.<\/p>\n
At High Point Village, acceptance isn\u2019t just a word – it\u2019s something you can see the moment you walk through the doors.<\/p>\n
For one villager, it means being seen for who you are – not your disability.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think acceptance is the key to accepting other people into your life, no matter if they are autistic or not,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n
A disability doesn\u2019t define you<\/p>\n
Katie Crump, director of development, said the villagers here aren\u2019t just part of the program – they are the heart of it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re just the greatest gift, and no two friends are the same just like anyone in the world, but their unique outlook on life is a lesson to us everyday of just looking at things in a different way and communicating in a different way,\u201d Crump said. \u201cThey\u2019re no less valuable and they add so much value to our lives, and especially around high point and the world that we live in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Serving with a purpose<\/p>\n
The sense of purpose for the villagers goes beyond the walls at high point. One villager says he\u2019s proud to give back to the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love all of the expectations of how to live up to yourself and being a good leader,\u201d He said. \u201cI loved building that house that was over there outside and it was called habitat for humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says it\u2019s not about perfection – but progress, and knowing you\u2019re never alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will always improve, no matter how difficult life will be, for everyone here, we all have different ways of doing things, but no matter we are all together as the same team if you know what I mean,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n
Because in the end, acceptance isn\u2019t about differences – it\u2019s about recognizing the impact every person can make.<\/p>\n
