HOUSTON \u2013 Students at Sam Houston High School are grappling with fear, frustration, and heartbreak after learning that their classmate and soccer co-captain, 18-year-old Mauro Henriquez, has been deported.<\/p>\n
Henriquez, a senior on track to graduate, had been in immigration custody since December after he and his father were detained during a routine check-in with immigration officials just days before Christmas. After months in detention facilities, he has now been deported to Honduras, where he has reunited with his father.<\/p>\n
Detained during routine immigration check-in<\/p>\n
According to a teacher\u2014who requested their identity be withheld\u2014Henriquez\u2019s detention came as a shock.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom what I understand\u2026 he and his dad were doing a check-in at the courthouse\u2026 and at that time ICE came\u2026 and they just took his dad\u2026 and\u2026 they came and got him,\u201d the teacher said.<\/p>\n
The teacher said Henriquez was initially held in a detention center before being transferred to a prison facility.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe got moved to a prison facility\u2026 it\u2019s an actual prison\u2026 he was housed with other convicted criminals\u2026 no kind of separation,\u201d the teacher said.<\/p>\n
Months of support ends in disappointment<\/p>\n
For months, classmates and teachers rallied around Henriquez, organizing efforts and speaking out in hopes he would be released and allowed to return to school in time to graduate.<\/p>\n
Now, with confirmation of his deportation, many students said they feel defeated.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of them are really sad\u2026 some of them were upset\u2026 there\u2019s a lot of different emotions,\u201d the teacher said.<\/p>\n
Fear spreads among students<\/p>\n
Beyond the grief, there is also growing fear among students\u2014particularly those who worry they or their family members could face a similar situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are others that are worried that this could happen to them and or their family members,\u201d the teacher added.<\/p>\n
Leaders push for resources and awareness<\/p>\n
Texas State Representative Armando Walle said Henriquez\u2019s case is both heartbreaking and reflective of broader concerns surrounding immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re heartbroken for Mauro. He should be walking with his classmates at graduation. But, he\u2019s been deported,\u201d Walle said.<\/p>\n
Walle said Henriquez and his father were complying with immigration requirements when they were detained.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were following the rules. They were reporting with immigration. But in one of those check-ins, they were detained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Henriquez is now in Honduras with his father, while his mother and other family members remain in Houston\u2014leaving the family separated across two countries.<\/p>\n
Community leaders said they are working to provide resources to students and families, including \u201cknow your rights\u201d meetings aimed at helping people understand legal protections and how to respond in similar situations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s vitally important that we empower community members about their rights,\u201d Walle said.<\/p>\n
School leaders have reassured students that campuses remain safe, but for many at Sam Houston High School, the emotional impact of Henriquez\u2019s deportation\u2014and the uncertainty it has created\u2014continues to weigh heavily.<\/p>\n
Statement from Department of Homeland Security<\/p>\n
\u201cOn April 8, Mauro Yosueth Henriquez, an illegal alien from Honduras, was deported back to his home country along with his father. On Dec. 16, 2025, ICE arrested Mauro Rigoberto Henriquez-Alfaro, a 44-year-old previously deported illegal alien from Honduras, and Mauro Yosueth Henriquez-Sanchez, an 18-year-old illegal alien from Honduras. Both Henriquez-Alfaro and Henriquez-Sanchez have received full due process under the law and had a final order of removal from a judge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn fact, Henriquez-Alfaro was previously ordered removed and deported to Honduras on July 31, 2008, at great taxpayer expense, and he has since illegally reentered the U.S. \u2013 a felony criminal offense.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $2,600 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream.
