{"id":251152,"date":"2026-04-15T16:56:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T16:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/251152\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T16:56:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T16:56:07","slug":"san-antonios-gigis-deli-takes-break-for-new-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/251152\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio&#8217;s Gigi&#8217;s Deli takes break for new project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of San Antonio\u2019s most acclaimed sandwich shops is taking a break, but don\u2019t cry over your cold cuts just yet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXFYid8CXtz\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigi\u2019s Deli<\/a> will be on hiatus from April 19 through June while its Tastemaker Award-nominated chef, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemap.com\/news\/restaurants-bars\/rising-star-chefs-tastemaker-awards\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Garcia<\/a>, works on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/milessatx\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Miles<\/a>, his first full-service concept.<\/p>\n<p>The small deli, inside El Tigre Coffee Roasters in St. Paul Square, announced the break via an Instagram post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat started as a small idea grew into something so much bigger,\u201d wrote Garcia. \u201cLong days, loud rooms, familiar faces, and a feeling that I still can\u2019t put into words. For the past six months and five years before that, this city not only raised me but has challenged and shaped everything about me. From the way I cook and host, to even the way I see the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia, an alum of The Cookhouse and Barbaro, started GiGi\u2019s in 2021 with a pop-up at St. Mary\u2019s Strip wine bar Little Death. The concept quickly drew a cult following, eventually leading to a proper <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemap.com\/news\/restaurants-bars\/gigis-deli-opening-el-tigre\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brick-and-mortar<\/a> at 123 Heiman St. in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the chef\u2019s ambition has never been just about making the perfect grinder. When his idea for a third-place neighborhood restaurant and bar came to life, he knew he had to make some choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGigi\u2019s is a one-man band \u2014 and I can\u2019t be in two places at once,\u201d said the busy chef in a quick phone conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia is partnering with El Tigre owner Tatanka Guerrero to bring his vision to the former Francis Bogside space. For now, he&#8217;s mostly keeping quiet about the details.<\/p>\n<p>He did share that Miles is a \u201cSan Antonio-inspired bar and bistro\u201d that will feature classic cocktails and a considered wine list. Locals will have to wait a little longer to see exactly what\u2019s on the menu.<\/p>\n<p>Fans might be able to get a little more chisme during CultureMap\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonio.culturemaptastemakers.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Tastemaker Awards <\/a>at the Briscoe Museum.
