Nearly 100 million income tax returns had been filed as of April 3,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-april-3-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">reported the Internal Revenue Service<\/a>, with the average refund amount being $3,462.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Here&#8217;s what you need to know about the upcoming tax filing deadline.<\/p>\n<p>File a tax extension 2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The IRS offers the following guidance:<\/p>\n<p>USA TODAY Shopping: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":body nav (prime)|e|auto spike click:5|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_sp_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/shopping\/\">Shop sales in tech, home, fashion, beauty &amp; more curated by our editors.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">If you have no taxes due: Individuals, regardless of income, can use IRS Free File\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/e-file-do-your-taxes-for-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">IRS.gov\/freefile<\/a>\u00a0to request an automatic six-month tax-filing extension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Alternatively, taxpayers can file\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f4868.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Form 4868<\/a>, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File. If they mail the form in, taxpayers must do so before April 15.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elpasotimes.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/2026\/04\/08\/taxes-mail-return-postmark-deadline\/89505579007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Changes at the U.S. Postal Service<\/a>\u00a0mean mail may take days to get postmarked and then be considered late by the IRS. If you&#8217;re short on time, go to the local post office and get a hand-stamped postmark or consider filing online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">If you owe money: Taxpayers can choose to submit an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">electronic payment<\/a>\u00a0and select Form 4868 or extension as the payment type. The IRS will count it as an extension automatically, and taxpayers won&#8217;t need to file Form 4868.<\/p>\n<p>When are taxes due?<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The deadline to file taxes is Wednesday, April 15.<\/p>\n<p>Can I file my taxes after April 15?<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Yes, but you&#8217;ll need to request an extension by visiting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/e-file-do-your-taxes-for-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">IRS.gov\/freefile<\/a>\u00a0or you can also file\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f4868.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Form 4868<\/a>, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File.<\/p>\n<p>IRS phone number<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Individuals filing taxes can call the IRS at 800-829-1040 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, while businesses can call 800-829-4933, also 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.<\/p>\n<p>How to request an IRS payment plan<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Payment options include full payment, a short-term payment plan (paying in 180 days or less) or a long-term payment plan (installment agreement) (paying monthly), according to the IRS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">You may qualify to apply online if:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/simple-payment-plans-for-individuals-and-businesses\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Simple payment plan (installment agreement)<\/a>: You owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest. You have filed all required returns.Short-term payment plan: You owe less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">You will need to create an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/online-account-for-individuals\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRS Online Account<\/a>, and then you can apply for a payment plan online without needing to call, mail, or visit the IRS.
