HOUSTON \u2013 Hundreds of Houston-area small business owners are scrambling after Painted Tree Boutiques, an indoor marketplace with six locations across the Houston area, abruptly shut down all of its stores nationwide with little to no warning.<\/p>\n
Vendors say they received an email notifying them of the immediate closure on Tuesday, leaving them rushing to recover their inventory and wondering whether they would ever see their final paychecks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe email came saying, hey we\u2019re shutting down immediately, so that was what caught me off guard,\u201d said Jamal Stenson, who owns Nature\u2019s Cure, one of the affected vendor businesses.<\/p>\n
What Painted Tree Boutiques was<\/p>\n
Painted Tree Boutiques operated as an indoor marketplace model, hosting hundreds of small business vendors per store. Rather than running their own storefronts, vendors rented booth space inside Painted Tree\u2019s locations, building their businesses inside someone else\u2019s walls.<\/p>\n
The concept gave small businesses a physical retail presence without the overhead of their own store. But that arrangement also meant vendors had little control when the larger business collapsed.<\/p>\n
Vendors left with inventory, uncertainty<\/p>\n
Within 24 hours of the closure announcement, what were once busy retail hubs had turned into a scramble of vendors hauling out merchandise, displays and equipment.<\/p>\n
For many, another challenge now is logistical. Where does all of that inventory go?<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t want to get another storage unit, then that\u2019s money you\u2019re spending that you\u2019re not bringing in,\u201d said Kristen Alderman, owner of Southeast Revival Designs.<\/p>\n
For others, the emotional toll runs just as deep.<\/p>\n
\u201cSad. Frustrating, we put all of our hard work…all of our time, investing a lot of money even starting a booth here,\u201d said Margarita Quincanar, owner of HTX Custom Creations.<\/p>\n
\u2018This was my main source of income\u2019<\/p>\n
While some vendors used Painted Tree as a side hustle to sell custom or handmade goods, others depended on it as their primary source of revenue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was my main source of income, especially for medical bills, so this is very unexpected,\u201d Alderman said.<\/p>\n
Making matters worse, many vendors say they may never see payment for sales already made this month. Under Painted Tree\u2019s model, vendors were typically paid in a lump sum at the beginning of the following month, meaning April sales could be lost entirely.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe might not even get paid for anything we have sold this month. We\u2019re not getting anything back from the rent or the deposits,\u201d Quincanar said.<\/p>\n
What comes next<\/p>\n
Many of the affected vendors say they are now pivoting by moving their businesses online, returning to local markets, or simply figuring it out as they go.<\/p>\n
But amid the uncertainty, vendors are unified in one message for the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, more than ever, support small businesses,\u201d Alderman said.<\/p>\n
