{"id":252550,"date":"2026-04-16T12:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T12:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/252550\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T12:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T12:58:10","slug":"dallas-art-prize-winner-on-pink-trees-texas-museums-and-why-its-ok-to-be-kind-of-hokey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/252550\/","title":{"rendered":"Dallas Art Prize winner on pink trees, Texas museums and why \u2018it&#8217;s OK to be kind of hokey\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wandering through the Dallas Museum of Art as a college student, it never occurred to John McAllister that his work could potentially wind up on its walls.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as the winner of the inaugural Dallas Art Prize, his work will be considered for the DMA\u2019s collection and he will receive $20,000 to use however he chooses to continue his work.<\/p>\n<p>For the Massachusetts-based painter, the possibility is surreal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to get ahead of myself, but, of course, that would be spectacular,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>John Sughrue, founder of the Dallas Art Fair, said the prize is meant to recognize an individual who is shaping contemporary art today and likely years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn McAllister will be a lasting influence in the art world not because his work demands attention, but because it quietly earns it \u2014 making him deeply deserving of major art prize recognition,\u201d Sughrue said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Strong Texas ties<\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin, McAllister made frequent trips to North Texas for its museums. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would drive up to Dallas just to see the iceberg painting by <a href=\"https:\/\/dma.org\/art\/collection\/object\/4171219\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Frederic Church<\/a> at the Dallas Museum [of Art],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>McAllister is best known for his lush natural landscapes and distinct color palette. Instead of using the typical muted earth tones like mossy greens or ruddy browns, his paintings burst with bright colors. He\u2019s always been one, and he believes kids all start out that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you sort of get socialized out of it because you start worrying about whether it looks real or what&#8217;s correct and things like that,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople just start becoming sort of conscious of what they&#8217;re doing. I think I just never went through that part. And I just kept making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His works are titled in a way that can feel poetic and playful if not a little ambiguous. <\/p>\n<p>One painting is named \u201csometimes beguile await while\u201d and another is \u201cvaunting haunting jaunts go romping.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"lazing incandesce no less, 2020 by John McAllister\"  width=\"880\" height=\"671\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776344290_787_.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Courtesy<\/p>\n<p>\/<\/p>\n<p> James Fuentes Gallery<\/p>\n<p> lazing incandesce no less, 2020 by John McAllister<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m giving a clue as to how I thought of it, and that way I also feel like it&#8217;s disarming,\u201d McAllister said. \u201cLike it&#8217;s okay to be kind of hokey.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He said the art prize will allow him to continue on with his work without worrying about the cost of paints or brushes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not gonna, you know, suddenly be painting something alligator and surfboards or something \u2014 maybe I should do that \u2014 but it&#8217;s going to be this sort of subtle shift [with my work] with occasional larger shifts, it&#8217;s always just pushing on,\u201d McAllister said. <\/p>\n<p>You can see McAllister\u2019s work at the James Fuentes Gallery booth throughout the Dallas Art Fair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dallasartfair.artsvp.com\/fa14cb?link=tickets\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Dallas Art Fair<\/a> is open to the public April 17-19 at 1807 Ross Ave, Dallas.Tickets start at $40.
