This year’s summer film series will operate a little differently as the historic theater undergoes its first major renovation in more than 50 years.<\/p>\n
AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 The Paramount Theatre is gearing up for a\u00a0major restoration project<\/a>. But first, movie fans will still be able to catch a few films during the 52nd Summer Classic Film Series.<\/p>\n Each summer, the Paramount’s series offers Central Texans a chance to beat the heat while taking in some classic cinema in a historical venue. But this year, the series will operate a little bit differently.<\/p>\n In mid-June, the Paramount \u2013 which turned 110 last year \u2013 will close for its first major renovation in more than five decades. The eight- to nine-month full restoration<\/a> is set to include updated infrastructure, new seats, implementation of plans from early 1900s blueprints, and more.<\/p>\n Opening Weekend of the Summer Classic Film Series will be among the final chances to see films at the Paramount before it temporarily closes, but the series will continue through Labor Day with screenings at the State Theatre next door and “other fun venues around town,” according to the Paramount.<\/p>\n The theater will preview the full summer lineup at its screening of “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” on April 25, but we already have a look at what fans can expect to see during Opening Weekend, May 22-24.<\/p>\n
Opening Night on Friday, May 22, will kick off with a double feature of “Casablanca” and “The Maltese Falcon,” both presented in 35mm.<\/p>\n On Saturday, May 23, the theatre will throw a 25th birthday party for “Spy Kids.” Director and Texas native Robert Rodriguez will be in attendance for the special screening and live concert event featuring Robert Rodriguez’s Family Spy Band.<\/p>\n On Sunday, May 24, movie fans can catch an afternoon screening of “Rear Window,” presented in 35mm. Then on Sunday evening, the Paramount will close out Opening Weekend with a 25th anniversary screening of “Mulholland Drive” in 35mm.<\/p>\n
