SAN ANTONIO \u2013 The latest episode of Pickup Lines<\/a> features award-winning actor, director and educator Tony Plana. <\/p>\n

The Cuban-born star is celebrating half a century in entertainment this year. Long before a decades-spanning acting career, Plana remembers the moment he first felt the power of performance.<\/p>\n

He was in the second grade, dressed in a crisp white outfit adorned with academic medals, standing in front of a crowd of about 1,100 people. Tasked with reciting a poem, he delivered it without fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had these 1,100 people captive,\u201d Plana recalled. \u201cWhen people ask me about the seminal moment \u2026 it has to go back to that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, he didn\u2019t think much of it. A teacher asked him to perform, and he simply said yes. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t even aware of it,\u201d he said. \u201cI had an affinity and kind of a natural gift for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That early spark would later be shaped by far more difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n

By third grade, Plana\u2019s life changed dramatically amid the Cuban Revolution. He described leaving his home as a \u201cradical extraction\u201d from everything familiar. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll of a sudden we were \u2026 ripped out of this culture, everything we knew,\u201d he said. \u201cWe really were strangers in a strange land.\u201d<\/p>\n

At age 8, Plana left Cuba with his mother and brother. The journey to the United States was traumatic, he said, recalling being strip-searched at the airport before arriving in Miami and seeking exile.<\/p>\n

Despite the upheaval, Plana quickly adapted. He said he learned English in about six months after realizing he needed to break out of what he described as a \u201cbubble\u201d of language.<\/p>\n

That determination would prove pivotal years later in high school, when a teacher gave him a life-changing direction while reading the Declaration of Independence. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I want you to read it like the immigrant that you are,\u2019\u201d Plana recalled. \u201cThat was my first direction.\u201d <\/p>\n

The moment reshaped how he approached language, identity and performance. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of the most transformational experiences I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Around that same time, Plana lived just half a block from MGM Studios, peering through gates as a paperboy and wondering what existed behind them. <\/p>\n

\u201cI started seeing this incredible world,\u201d he said. \u201cI never imagined that I could be part of that world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, he would become part of it.<\/p>\n

Plana built a career that includes roles alongside comedy legends in \u201cThree Amigos,\u201d which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was so blessed \u2026 working with some of the greats,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I was right in the thick of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though he once planned to become a lawyer, Plana said he ultimately caught what he jokingly calls \u201cthe bug\u201d for acting \u2014 a passion he describes as \u201cthe incurable virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, his focus extends beyond the screen. <\/p>\n

In San Antonio, he has helped expand a program called Seniors in Play, using theater to support seniors, encouraging participants to write and perform stories from their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get them out of their apartment \u2026 and they start to connect,\u201d he said. \u201cPerforming arts are therapeutic. They help to heal.\u201d <\/p>\n

The program has grown from two centers to 15 across the city and county, offering participants a chance to revisit meaningful life experiences through storytelling and performance.<\/p>\n
