It is a place where generations come together to remember, heal and support one another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Monica Morris, that mission is personal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Morris is the first female commander of the historic post. She is also a survivor of the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She said those memories are still difficult to revisit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt was just a really traumatic experience. Helped a couple people get out of the Pentagon. Was just a really bad day,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Morris said experiences like that are exactly why VFW posts remain important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe VFW posts are a safe haven for our combat veterans \u2026 it\u2019s a place where you can feel comfortable because you\u2019re with people that have experienced similar events,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Veterans say that support system is especially meaningful because it allows people from different backgrounds and generations to connect through shared experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere are people that look like me that come to places like this,\u201d said Ann Rebollar, U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer veteran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe also supporting each other as veteran communities,\u201d Rebollar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Robert Trujillo, the post reflects something much bigger about the American story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFreedom isn\u2019t free,\u201d Trujillo said. \u201cWe lost a lot of veterans. We have a lot veterans that are ill. We have lot of aging veterans. We have young veterans.
