Winds will be light early but pick up through the afternoon as clouds thin, leading to a partly cloudy sky. Highs will climb to near 90 degrees along the Interstate 35 corridor, about 10 degrees above the mid-April average and more typical of late May in the Austin area.

A well-advertised trough of low pressure and its associated cold front will move across the Central Plains on Friday, reaching Texas by Friday night. The front is expected to arrive in the Hill Country by Saturday morning and push through the rest of Central Texas by Saturday afternoon.

This will be one of those days where the high temperature happens in the morning, followed by much cooler and windy conditions in the afternoon, cool enough to need a jacket. Keep that in mind if you are heading to the Reggae Festival in downtown Austin or taking the drive out to last weekend of the Sherwood Forest Faire in McDade.

While the biggest story will be the significant temperature drop, we’ll also see scattered showers and a few thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

“With deep moisture in place, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Saturday in a favorable environment for instances of locally heavy rainfall,” meteorologists from the Austin and San Antonio National Weather Service wrote in their weather bulletin on Thursday. “Weather Prediction Center continues to highlight a good portion of our area in a level 1 of 4 for excessive rainfall.”

We’ll keep a small rain chance (30%) in the forecast Sunday, although the best chances will be south and west of Austin.
