Tony Gonzales (R-San Antonio) is outraising her Republican counterpart \u2014 a sign the party is growing optimistic about its chances in deep-red territory this election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile GOP leaders in D.C. are spending big to boost a congresswoman\u2019s brother in a different San Antonio-area district that was created to help their party pick up seats.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign finance reports were due Thursday for federal candidates, offering the first look at money raised and spent since the March primary.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates for Congress and U.S. Senate typically report their fundraising on a quarterly basis, but these reports only cover Feb. 12 through March 31, since some of this quarter was <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/top-fundraisers-for-san-antonio-congressional-races\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/top-fundraisers-for-san-antonio-congressional-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">already covered<\/a> in pre-primary <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reports that were due<\/a> just before the election. <\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/trump-gop-redistricting-texas-san-antonio-congress-maps\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/trump-gop-redistricting-texas-san-antonio-congress-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Republicans\u2019 mid-cycle redistricting effort<\/a> last summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/43-percent-bexar-county-residents-new-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/43-percent-bexar-county-residents-new-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">43% of Bexar County residents now live<\/a> in a different congressional district than they did in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 new congressional maps can be <a href=\"https:\/\/dvr.capitol.texas.gov\/Congress\/0\/PLANC2333\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/dvr.capitol.texas.gov\/Congress\/0\/PLANC2333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">viewed here<\/a>. Credit: Texas Capitol<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top takeaways from the latest campaign finance reports.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla Stout outraises Herrera by four times in TX23 race<\/p>\n<p>Political watchers across the country are suddenly tuned in to Texas\u2019 23rd Congressional District, where allegations of sexual misconduct caused then-incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-drops-reelection-bid-tx23-affair\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-drops-reelection-bid-tx23-affair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-San Antonio) to drop his reelection bid<\/a> days after the March primary.<\/p>\n<p>The massive San Antonio-to-El Paso district is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/house\/california-house\/house-ratings-changes-tx-23-and-ca-48-shift-democrats-direction?mc_cid=66e77e4d79&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/house\/california-house\/house-ratings-changes-tx-23-and-ca-48-shift-democrats-direction?mc_cid=66e77e4d79&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">considered quite red<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/18\/texas-redistricting-maps-charts-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tx23.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5429240\"  \/><\/a>Credit: Texas Tribune<\/p>\n<p>But in the midst of Gonzales\u2019 fall from grace, Democrats\u2019 nominee to replace him, child welfare attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/katy-padilla-stout-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Katy Padilla Stout<\/a>, said <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/katy-padilla-stout-texas-23rd-congressional-district-democrat-nominee\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/katy-padilla-stout-texas-23rd-congressional-district-democrat-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">she\u2019s seen renewed interest from donors <\/a>who had given up on a district that voted overwhelmingly for Republicans in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign finance reports covering Feb. 12 through March 31 indicate Padilla Stout brought in roughly four times as much money as her Republican opponent, YouTube creator <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/brandon-herrera-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Brandon Herrera<\/a>, who maintains a healthy advantage in cash-on-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla Stout <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/katy-padilla-stout-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/katy-padilla-stout-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised roughly $190,000<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/katy-padilla-stout-texas-23rd-congressional-district-democrat-nominee\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/katy-padilla-stout-texas-23rd-congressional-district-democrat-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Herrera\u2019s $50,000<\/a> in the same six-week span.<\/p>\n<p>But Herrera reported about $300,000 in the bank as of March 31, to Padilla Stout\u2019s $150,000. <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260214_SAReport_NEBCDEndorsementForum_SW_0003_A.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5430875\"  \/>Katy Padilla Stout, candidate for Texas\u2019 23rd Congressional District, speaks at the Northeast Bexar County Democrats endorsement forum at Unity Church on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, in San Antonio. Credit: Salgu Wissmath for the San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether the candidates will have to spend some of that money on a special election before November, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-resign-congress-san-antonio-expulsion\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-resign-congress-san-antonio-expulsion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">now that Gonzales has resigned from office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans currently hold just a two-seat majority in the U.S. House, and some in the party believe Gov. Greg Abbott should call a special election to give them another vote.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/30\/texas-senate-district-9-runoff-rehmet-wambsganss-special-election\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/30\/texas-senate-district-9-runoff-rehmet-wambsganss-special-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">winning special elections in tough territory<\/a> since Trump\u2019s return to office, and would almost certainly make a play for this one as well.<\/p>\n<p>A special election could include additional candidates who sign up to run in <a href=\"https:\/\/politicaldictionary.com\/words\/jungle-primary\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/politicaldictionary.com\/words\/jungle-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a jungle primary-style race<\/a>, but Padilla Stout and Herrera are locked in as their party\u2019s nominees for November.<\/p>\n<p>Out-of-state donors: Both Padilla Stout and Herrera took in many contributions from outside of Texas. <\/p>\n<p>Padilla Stout is getting help from groups that bundle on behalf of Democratic candidates nationwide, including <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/emilys-list.png?mc_cid=66e77e4d79&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/emilys-list.png?mc_cid=66e77e4d79&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Emily\u2019s List<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/bold-pac.png\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/bold-pac.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bold PAC<\/a>, while Herrera has benefitted from a national profile as a gun influencer.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Brenda-Bazan-matt-gaetz-brandon-herrera-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5362197\"  \/>Brandon Herrera, Texas 23rd congressional district candidate, signs a cover of the magazine Skillset featuring him at a rally at the Angry Elephant. Credit: Brenda Baz\u00e1n \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Don Henley, lead singer of the Eagles, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/don-henley.png\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/don-henley.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">cut Padilla Stout a $1,000 check<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/brandon-herrera-republican-nominee-texas-23-race\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/brandon-herrera-republican-nominee-texas-23-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Republicans have rallied around Herrera<\/a> as their nominee, including endorsements <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/trump-brandon-herrera.png\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/trump-brandon-herrera.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">from Trump<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mike-johnson-brandon-herrera.png\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mike-johnson-brandon-herrera.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana)<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But his report doesn\u2019t show the same personal contributions from House GOP leaders as another San Antonio-area candidate, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/carlos-de-la-cruz-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Carlos De La Cruz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Herrera has shown some ability to self-fund, loaning his campaign $420,000 ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-election-results-texas-23-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/tony-gonzales-election-results-texas-23-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a tough GOP primary<\/a> where he finished first. His most recent report indicates the campaign is carrying about $570,000 in debt.<\/p>\n<p>National GOP leaders boost congresswoman\u2019s brother in TX35<\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 35th Congressional District was redrawn to give Republicans another pickup opportunity this cycle, and the latest campaign finance reports indicate GOP leaders in D.C. want the new San Antonio-area seat to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/carlos-de-la-cruz-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Carlos De La Cruz<\/a>, the brother of U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Edinburg).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"716\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tx35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437784\"  \/>Credit: Texas Tribune<\/p>\n<p>Carlos De La Cruz is a retired Air Force veteran whose campaign wasn\u2019t particularly active before <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/carlos-de-la-cruz-qa-tx-35-runoff\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/carlos-de-la-cruz-qa-tx-35-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">party leaders swooped in<\/a> the day before early voting.<\/p>\n<p>Their endorsements came as a surprise to some Texas GOP leaders who saw the district as a natural fit for a different Republican, popular state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lujan-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Lujan<\/a> (R-San Antonio), who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-35-congressional-district-primary-election-results\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-35-congressional-district-primary-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">finished first in the March primary<\/a>, but now trails De La Cruz is fundraising headed into <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/the-san-antonio-reports-2026-republican-primary-runoff-voter-guide\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/the-san-antonio-reports-2026-republican-primary-runoff-voter-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the May 26 runoff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tx35-carlos-de-la-cruz-john-lujan.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437790\"  \/>Carlos De La Cruz, left, and John Lujan, right, are headed to a GOP primary runoff on May 26. Credit: Andrea Drusch and Scott Ball \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/carlos-de-la-cruz-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/carlos-de-la-cruz-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">De La Cruz reported<\/a> about $220,000 raised between Feb. 12 and March 31 \u2014 more than any other congressional candidate running to represent the Bexar County area \u2014 and reported about $140,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/john-lujan-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/john-lujan-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lujan\u2019s $150,000 raised<\/a> in the same span and $115,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were the top fundraiser this quarter and have nearly twice the cash on hand heading into the election because Texans are ready for a real conservative fighter, not another career politician who talks right and governs left,\u201d De La Cruz said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>De La Cruz\u2019s report is chock full of checks from GOP leaders in Washington: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), Majority Whip Tom\u00a0Emmer\u00a0(R-Minnesota), and leadership PACs aligned with U.S. Rep.\u00a0Jason Smith\u00a0(R-Missouri) and Monica De La Cruz \u2014 who faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/09\/bobby-pulido-quinceaneras-monica-de-la-cruz-south-texas-congress\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/09\/bobby-pulido-quinceaneras-monica-de-la-cruz-south-texas-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">her own tough race this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About a third of De La Cruz\u2019s haul came from conservative PACs, while a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ai-industry-super-pac-wins-congressional-primaries-2026-3?mc_cid=f5113c02b3&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ai-industry-super-pac-wins-congressional-primaries-2026-3?mc_cid=f5113c02b3&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">group aligned with AI industry leaders<\/a> also spent for him in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Lujan\u2019s report noted contributions from more local political influencers, including businesswoman Hope Andrade, and he\u2019s racked up endorsements from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LujanForTX\/status\/2032521613799768553?mc_cid=8ba69a3829&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LujanForTX\/status\/2032521613799768553?mc_cid=8ba69a3829&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">state lawmakers<\/a> and other local elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got me on the federal side because of his sister,\u201d Lujan said of his opponent. \u201cBut if it was down to local, on-the-ground stuff, we would win easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats trail in fundraising for tough TX35 race<\/p>\n<p>Democrats also have a runoff in this race, but neither candidate is bringing in the type of money De La Cruz and Lujan raised.<\/p>\n<p>Redistricting pushed the district\u2019s progressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-08-25\/austin-tx-congressman-greg-casar-campaign-u-s-house-of-representatives-district-37-lloyd-doggett-redistricting-map\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-08-25\/austin-tx-congressman-greg-casar-campaign-u-s-house-of-representatives-district-37-lloyd-doggett-redistricting-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">incumbent U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Austin) into a different district<\/a>, but party leaders still plan to compete for the seat if they can get their favored candidate through the primary.<\/p>\n<p>National Democrats are hanging their hopes on longtime Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/johnny-garcia-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Johnny Garcia<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/johnny-garcia-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/johnny-garcia-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in about $90,000<\/a> between Feb. 12 and March 31, compared <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/maureen-galindo-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/maureen-galindo-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">to just $5,000 raised<\/a> by housing activist <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/maureen-galindo-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Maureen Galindo<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-2026-primary-election-takeaways\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-2026-primary-election-takeaways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">shocked political watchers<\/a> by finishing first in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia says his haul is evidence he\u2019s the only one who can assemble the serious campaign needed to win in November. But he\u2019s also faced some questions from fellow Democrats about <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">help received from a pro-Israel PAC<\/a> and a group aligned with congressional moderates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t control who decides to put their support in me,\u201d Garcia told the North East Bexar County Democrats (NEBCD) at a forum on Saturday. \u201cBut from the get-go \u2014 since we launched in October \u2014 there\u2019s been only one candidate in this race that has come out as the front-runner, and has garnered the support that we haven\u2019t had here in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Galindo, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/housing-activist-maureen-galindo-tx35-congressional-candidate-runoff\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/housing-activist-maureen-galindo-tx35-congressional-candidate-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">believes she can continue to pick up votes<\/a> with more grassroots-style campaign tactics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not taking money from Israel \u2026 or from the Blue Dog Democrats, who are constantly voting with the Republicans, for war with Iran, for ICE,\u201d Galindo said at the NEBCD forum. \u201cI\u2019m not compromised. And I\u2019m going to fight against all of those things that are taking away our rights in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quieter races in TX20 and TX21<\/p>\n<p>Campaign spending in two other San Antonio-area districts has been relatively quiet in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/18\/texas-redistricting-maps-charts-analysis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tx20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437795\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 20th Congressional District, represented by U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/joaquin-castro-2026-candidate-for-texas-20th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Joaquin Castro<\/a> (D-San Antonio), was made even bluer in redistricting and isn\u2019t on either national party\u2019s radar for November.<\/p>\n<p>It gained a lot of new voters when it went from a primarily Westside district to one that covers most of downtown, and Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/edgardo-baez-2026-candidate-for-texas-20th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Edgardo Baez<\/a> hopes to court some of those newcomers who haven\u2019t voted for Castro in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The political newcomer raised $1,500 between Feb. 12 and March 31 and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/edgardo-baez-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> about $5,400 on hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Castro did not have a report on the Federal Election Commission website as of Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/18\/texas-redistricting-maps-charts-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/tx21.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437796\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 21st Congressional <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-congressional-district-21-republican-primary-debate-san-antonio\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-congressional-district-21-republican-primary-debate-san-antonio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">featured a heated GOP primary<\/a> in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Dripping Springs), but also isn\u2019t likely to draw big spending this fall because it\u2019s drawn so overwhelmingly red.<\/p>\n<p>Former Major League Baseball player <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mark-teixeira-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mark Teixeira<\/a> blew the crowded field of GOP contenders out of the water in fundraising, and secured the nomination without a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Teixeira put $2.75 million of his own money into his campaign, and got big help from outside groups. That loan is still <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/teixeira-q1-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/teixeira-q1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reflected on his most recent report<\/a>, meaning he could eventually repay himself from other fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>He brought in $180,000 this round and reported about $260,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/texas-21-mark-teixeira-kristin-hook.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5437813\"  \/>Candidates for Texas\u2019 21st Congressional District, Republican Mark Teixeira, right, Democrat Kristin Hook, left, are shown. She\u2019d raised about $100,000 for the race as of Feb. 11.<\/p>\n<p>Massive spending the Texas Senate race<\/p>\n<p>In Texas\u2019 U.S. Senate race, Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-talarico-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">James Talarico<\/a>\u2018s campaign\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=fd8b4d2338&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported raising $10 million<\/a>\u00a0since the primary, and an astounding $27 million total haul in the first quarter of 2026. <\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t quite top Democrat Beto O\u2019Rourke\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/beto-orourke-raised-more-than-38m-in-the-3rd-quarter-a-record-thats-about-3-times-ted-cruzs-haul\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/beto-orourke-raised-more-than-38m-in-the-3rd-quarter-a-record-thats-about-3-times-ted-cruzs-haul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">best quarter of his own U.S. Senate race in 2018<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/15\/politics\/talarico-democrats-senate-fundraising?sid=62a72eff812bc1bd36077d47&amp;ss=P&amp;st_rid=null&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=summary&amp;utm_campaign=SAEN_TexasTake\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/15\/politics\/talarico-democrats-senate-fundraising?sid=62a72eff812bc1bd36077d47&amp;ss=P&amp;st_rid=null&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=summary&amp;utm_campaign=SAEN_TexasTake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he\u2019s raised a lot more money<\/a> much earlier in the race. John Cornyn<\/a> (R-Texas) and his challenger <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ken-paxton-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Attorney General Ken Paxton<\/a> are still battling it out in an expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/the-san-antonio-reports-2026-republican-primary-runoff-voter-guide\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/the-san-antonio-reports-2026-republican-primary-runoff-voter-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">May 26 primary runoff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn\u2019s campaign\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=085d1a72ff&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said he raised $9 million<\/a>\u00a0across several supporting groups in Q1, including $3.4 million in the weeks since the primary, where he finished first. He had $8 million on hand as of March 31. <\/p>\n<p>Paxton <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/paxton-q1.png\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/paxton-q1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported that<\/a> he\u2019d raised $2.2 million in Q1 and had $2.6 million on hand between his campaign and joint fundraising committee. His campaign didn\u2019t say how much of that money had been raised after the March primary.<\/p>\n<p>Both Cornyn and Paxton also have super PACs helping them. <\/p>\n<p>The pro-Cornyn group Texans for a Conservative Majority raised about $9.5 million in the first quarter, while the pro-Paxton Lone Star Liberty PAC raised about $2.1 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/15\/john-cornyn-ken-paxton-runoff-first-quarter-fundraising\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/15\/john-cornyn-ken-paxton-runoff-first-quarter-fundraising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to the Texas Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Democratic nominee to replace U.S. Rep.
