Joy. Taxes. A burger place somebody swears by. You know the kind of recommendations: A chef’s kiss (muah!) here, a “trust me, bro” there. A quarter of the time, your friend could be right on the money. The other 75 percent? Eh.

So in that spirit, I took an exit off I-10 in West Houston and found a strip mall burger spot not too far from the cemetery and IKEA. Buff Burger at 1014 Wirt Rd. has all the hallmarks of a fast-casual chain restaurant but without the chain. More importantly, it’s a respectable and fine burger. It’s not a home run, but it’s not a foul either. It’s the perfect base hit.

I walked into Buff Burger on a Tuesday afternoon. Because of its bright green logo and location— right next to a drip IV spa and urgent care—it’s reminiscent of a CBD and vape shop. Rest assured, the only novelties inside are custom burgers and sides. The restaurant is a narrow, clean corridor that’s fairly typical of a lot of fast-casual chain spots. You order at the back register, grab a number and sit down.

Now, Buff Burger resembles a chain because it was one. Paul and Sara Burden opened the first Buff Burger, the one along Wirt, in 2015. The restaurant differentiated itself from others of its ilk by emphasizing fresh and Texas-grown ingredients and scratch-made cooking. The Burdens opened two more locations in 2018, one in Montrose and another in Westchase. Both shuttered in 2020, but the flagship remains.

That fresh and scratch ethos shows up prominently with the food. I ordered the GOAT Burger, a special Buff Burger that was running until June and comes with their signature beef patty, oven-roasted campari tomatoes, whipped goat cheese, arugula, and tomato truffle mayo. One bite in and I felt like I was eating a fresh salad—in a good way. I didn’t quite get the peppery, bitter taste of the arugula or anything from the mayo, but the campari tomatoes and goat cheese certainly stood out. The real star was the medium-cooked patty with an unmistakable beefy flavor. It was tremendously juicy, with fat and grease dripping off the burger and onto the plate.

The other star of the meal was Buff Burger’s comically large Buff Tots, crispy outside and fluffy inside. I ordered a concrete (an extra dense frozen custard), but it made me miss the ones I’ve had at Abbott and Culver’s. The French fries were fine, though a bit forgettable.

The Buff Burger meal is the kind of meal I’d feel safe talking about (even writing about) and not feel like somebody on the other end is going to feel like they were scammed by my words. For folks in the neighborhood, I bet it’s a treat. For drivers passing by, it’s the perfect place to stop for a good meal to go. Trust me, bro.

Life carries a lot of certainties. Joy. Taxes. A burger place somebody swears by.
