After what’s expected to be a very warm Friday across South Texas, a strong cold front is set to move through the region Saturday, sending afternoon temperatures 20 degrees below average for mid-April. Rain chances will also rise, but thankfully, severe thunderstorms are not expected.

Article continues below this ad

This also may be one of your last opportunities to break out a jacket or sweatshirt before next fall, since strong cold fronts like this become far less common by late April and into May. Here’s a timeline for what you can expect in San Antonio over the next few days, including when rain chances will be highest.

San Antonio forecast timeline

Friday: Another mild, but comfortable morning is expected in San Antonio as morning temps hover near the 70-degree mark through 9 a.m. Throughout the day, clouds will slowly decrease, giving way to more sunshine by the afternoon. Temps will likely top out near 90 degrees by 4 to 5 p.m. Winds will be breezy, with some gusts expected to reach 20 to 25 mph.

<img alt="Shown are the expected high temperatures across the region by 4 to 5 p.m. Friday. Temps will be 25 to 30 degrees cooler at the same time Saturday.

Pivotal Weather

If you’re planning on heading to the opening nights of the Fiesta Oyster Bake, A Taste of New Orleans, or Fiesta De Los Reyes, be sure to stay properly hydrated. Temperatures will stay in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees through 7 p.m., with high humidity levels also expected.

Article continues below this ad

Saturday: After another mild and humid morning, the incoming cold front is expected to reach San Antonio around 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. As the front arrives, cooler air will immediately move into the region from the north.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the 60s throughout the early afternoon, about 25 to 30 degrees cooler than the afternoon highs on Friday. After 6 p.m., San Antonio temperatures are then likely to fall into the upper 50s after 5 p.m., so you likely want a jacket if you plan on being out for Fiesta.

There is a chance of rain with this cold front, but it’s not expected to be a washout. The initial front will bring about a 30% chance of scattered showers and weak storms through the afternoon, but rain chances are likely to increase to around 60% by Saturday evening. Rain won’t last all day, but showers could be off and on into the late night hours.

Article continues below this ad

Winds will also be quite breezy, likely coming in at 15 to 20 mph throughout Saturday, with periodic gusts up to 30 mph expected.

Sunday: A cool morning is expected on Sunday, as temperatures will likely sit in the 50s between 6 and 10 a.m. Temps will warm slowly by the middle of the day, with highs expected to top out in the upper 60s to low 70s – about 10 degrees below average for this time of year.

A few showers will remain possible on Sunday, especially in the morning. However, overall rain chances will trend lower by the afternoon, with only a 20% chance of rain after 10 a.m. Antonio. Mostly cloudy skies are expected, but there is some potential of a bit of sunshine by the afternoon.

Article continues below this ad

Monday: A weak upper-atmospheric disturbance will allow for rain chances to rise again on Monday, with about a 50-60% chance of showers in the San Antonio metro area. Temperatures will also turn cooler, as highs are likely to top out in the mid- to upper 60s.

<img alt="Shown are the potential rainfall totals across the region through Monday. Thunderstorms are not expected, but there’s potential for cool temperatures and rain to continue through the evening.

Article continues below this ad

Warmer weather is expected to return by the middle of the week. Temperatures will rise back into the 70s on Tuesday before reaching the 80s Wednesday and Thursday.
