SAN ANTONIO \u2013 As Fiesta<\/a> celebrations ramp up across San Antonio, one local influencer is encouraging younger people to step up and volunteer \u2014 saying the city\u2019s biggest traditions depend on it.<\/p>\n

Gabriela Reyes recently shared a video on her TikTok<\/a> and Instagram<\/a> accounts showing herself making flowers for A Night In Old San Antonio (NIOSA), one of Fiesta\u2019s biggest volunteer-driven events.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my second time doing this,\u201d Reyes said.<\/p>\n

Reyes, who is 26, said she was by far the youngest person in the room while volunteering.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in the room is most likely retired. They are in their 50s and 70s,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cI was definitely the youngest person there by far.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said being one of the few younger volunteers motivated her even more.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very big on traditions, and I think that Fiesta is such a beautiful thing,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cIt\u2019s important for me to not let those things die out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyes said her message to younger generations is simple.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be to try something new,\u201d she said. \u201cI went by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also said she was surprised by the number of people who reached out after she posted about volunteering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were people commenting that they\u2019ve lived here forever and had no idea that there were volunteer opportunities,\u201d Reyes said.<\/p>\n

She said hearing from so many people made her realize there is still strong interest in helping keep Fiesta traditions alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat made me happy just seeing how many people there are that do want to help and are interested in learning,\u201d Reyes said.<\/p>\n

Reyes said many people may not realize how much volunteer work goes into Fiesta events like NIOSA.<\/p>\n

\u201cFiesta is such a big thing that relies on so many people in different aspects,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cSo not just the flowers, but making the food, working the booths \u2014 so many things play into that, and without community, it\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

For people interested in getting involved, Fiesta organizers often begin recruiting volunteers months before events begin.<\/p>\n

All of the volunteer opportunities to make flowers for this year\u2019s event are done, however NIOSA already has the following dates set to start making flowers for next year: <\/p>\n
