\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn an April 16 meeting, the Leander City Council voted 6-1 to approve of a $120,280 expansion to this year\u2019s Liberty Fest celebration, which will mark the 250th anniversary of the nation\u2019s founding<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The breakdown<\/p>\n

Ashlea Boyle, executive director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services for Leander, presented three options<\/a> for consideration as the city prepares for Independence Day.<\/p>\n

Council members approved Option 1\u2014the most expansive plan\u2014which adds a $60,000 drone show, \u201cpatriotic parade,\u201d and a weekend of activities before Liberty Fest. The plan also includes expanded programming, community giveaways, and additional decorations throughout the city.<\/p>\n

The second option would have reduced costs to $74,505 by scaling back the drone show, eliminating the parade and cutting other elements. A third option would have kept the existing Liberty Fest budget of $95,000 with no additional programming.<\/p>\n

What they\u2019re saying<\/p>\n

Mayor Na’Cole Thompson<\/a> noted that America 250 provided an opportunity to recognize veterans and suggested special seating for veterans, a \u201cThank a Veteran\u201d campaign at local schools and partnering with the VFW.<\/p>\n

Council member Annette Sponseller raised concerns about the cost and feasibility of booking a $60,000 drone show, which would occur in addition to the annual fireworks.<\/p>\n

Council member Stephen Chang noted that partnering with local businesses and nonprofit organizations could help the city \u201cdefray\u201d the costs associated with expanding the celebrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just think about all the tax dollars that will come in as folks come and spend their money throughout the day, and enjoying the day, and also for the drone show,\u201d Council member Chang said. \u201cI like to think we can recoup some of those costs and perhaps bring tax dollars back past the initial investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sponseller cast the sole vote against the proposal to approve Option One.<\/p>\n

Next Steps<\/p>\n

Liberty Fest<\/a> is planned for July 3 at Devine Lake<\/a>.
