Who’s at risk?

After several days of severe weather across parts of Texas, the Lone Star State is about to flip the switch back to winter. A blustery cold front is set to barrel through, bringing the coldest temperatures in weeks — and believe it or not, a few spots could even dip near freezing.

Here are five graphics that tell the weather story:

Ahead of this well-advertised cold front, temperatures across Texas will surge into the 80s and 90s from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast. Winds will also pick up, with gusts between 20 and 25 mph across Central and South Texas. In North Texas and the Panhandle, however, winds could gust as high as 40 to 50 mph, creating a very high fire danger through Friday.

By late Friday afternoon into the evening, the cold front will begin pushing into the far northern part of the state near Dalhart, then move southeast with a sharp wind shift to the north and gusts between 40 and 50 mph.

Temperatures will drop quickly behind the front, with Amarillo falling into the 40s by 9 p.m. and into the 30s by Saturday morning. Temperatures will rebound across this region on Saturday afternoon with highs in the low to mid-60s, about 5 degrees below normal for the area.

Parts of Texas could briefly drop to near-freezing temperatures possible in parts of Texas

While most areas should remain just above freezing, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Amarillo say parts of the northern Panhandle could briefly dip to freezing both Saturday and Sunday morning.

In anticipation of near-freezing temperatures, a freeze watch has been issued for the Texas Panhandle during that time. Freeze conditions could damage crops, sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

The cold front is expected to reach Dallas around sunrise Saturday, then move into Waco and Austin by midmorning, San Antonio after the lunch hour and Houston by Saturday evening. Everyone will be reaching for their jackets as temperatures drop 10 to 30 degrees within 24 hours.

While the biggest story will be the sharp temperature change, the front will also bring scattered showers and thunderstorms as it moves across the state, especially from Wichita Falls toward Abilene and then south along the Interstate 35 corridor. No severe weather is expected, but some storms could produce moderate to heavy rain.

The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of Central and East Texas under a Level 1 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall and isolated flash flooding. Rain totals could reach 1 to 2 inches in some isolated areas.

After several days of severe weather across parts of Texas, the Lone Star State is about to flip…

[6
27,29,28
0":"post-255417","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-texas","8":"tag-texas","9":"tag-texas-headlines","10":"tag-texas-news
["GET
