EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) \u2014Walls in downtown El Paso are being transformed into large-scale murals as artists from across the country gather for Borderland Jam.<\/p>\n
Spray paint, sketches, and creativity are taking over the area, as artists turn blank walls into vibrant works of art\u2014right in front of the community.<\/p>\n
Among them is Thanos the Wanderer, part of the FTS\u2014\u201cFrom the Streets\u201d\u2014crew from California. He says being surrounded by other talented artists is both exciting and challenging.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels really good. Getting your art out there is a big part of the game. There\u2019s a lot of really good artists out here today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But with that talent comes pressure.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit of pressure to make sure that your stuff looks good,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Still, for Thanos, the experience goes beyond the final piece. He says public art plays a major role in culture and gives artists a space to freely express themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a huge believer in art in a public space. It\u2019s a huge part of culture, especially American culture,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The event is not only drawing artists\u2014but also community members curious to watch the process unfold.<\/p>\n
Stephanie, who attended the event with her dad and their pug Luna, says the artwork reflects something deeper.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, it\u2019s just a style. It\u2019s an expression. It\u2019s a way that people show how they feel inside,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She also says events like this highlight what makes El Paso unique.<\/p>\n
\u201cEl Paso has always been pretty\u2026 it\u2019s pretty multicultural. Everyone comes from a lot of different places. I just think it\u2019s beautiful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
As artists continue working throughout the event, many say the experience itself is just as meaningful as the finished mural.<\/p>\n
\u201cPainting is kind of like a Zen Buddha mode. Everything that\u2019s going on in life\u2026 all of that takes a backseat, and you get to just kind of enjoy the moment,\u201d Thanos said.<\/p>\n
