It really is. I think it started before last year, even with our girls’ high school team making it to state,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of kids that want to participate in softball and different things, and so we had this field set in here and this is a big collective collaborative effort with everybody to get this field up and running.”

Chad Harrell, Sundown Youth Softball board president, says they chose to name the field in his honor mostly because of the work he does when there’s no game being played.

“Nobody sees everything that goes on behind the scenes. You drive out here at 7 o’clock in the morning, Coach Holson’s out here doing something, same thing for at night. He’s always out here picking up trash, putting up signs, just anything to help out,” Harrell says, “His heart’s in the right place, and he really cares about the youth sports in this community, and that’s why we ultimately chose him”.

Holson already knowns many of the young, future Roughettes who will be using that field. He works with them every day as the elementary PE teacher and says that experience is as rewarding as having a ballpark named after him.

“So, every day, I get to be around these kids every day and that’s a privilege in its own right, getting to be around all these little kids every day. If there’s one thing you can do every day, it’s that you can come around these small kids up there at the school, and if you don’t think they won’t brighten your day, just try it one time. They’ll brighten your day every day,” Holson said.

Ron Holson Field is located on 505 Park Street and is open to softball for anyone wanting to play.

Copyright 2026 KCBD.
