April 18 (Reuters) – Tesla<\/a> (TSLA<\/a>)is rolling out its robotaxis in Dallas and Houston, the electric vehicle maker said on \u200cSaturday, marking further expansion of its nascent service in the \u200cUnited States since its Austin, Texas, launch last year.<\/p>\n

Tesla’s official robotaxi account on X \u200bannounced the launch and posted two videos showing its best-selling Model Y SUVs running in the two cities with no human driver or monitor in the front seats.<\/p>\n

It posted two map images outlining service \u200cboundaries, but did not \u2060disclose further details such as fleet size or pricing.<\/p>\n

“Try Tesla Robotaxi in Dallas & Houston!” CEO Elon Musk said \u2060reposting the X post.<\/p>\n

Tesla’s move comes as the robotaxi business has regained momentum with Alphabet (GOOG<\/a>)’s Waymo and Amazon’ (AMZN<\/a>)s Zoox speeding up expansion.<\/p>\n

Expanding the \u200brobotaxi service \u200band wider adoption of its \u200bfull self-driving software, a version \u200cof which underpins the technology, is key to Tesla’s growth strategy as Musk has pivoted the company’s focus to artificial intelligence<\/a> and robotics from EVs.<\/p>\n

Much of the company’s $1.3 trillion valuation hinges on that bet.<\/p>\n

Tesla first deployed a small group of self-driving taxis in an area \u200cof Austin with human safety monitors \u200band other restrictions. The company has since \u200bwidened the service area \u200band started removing the monitors.<\/p>\n

Last year, Tesla also started \u200ca ride-hailing service in the \u200bSan Francisco Bay \u200bArea. Musk has promised to expand the robotaxi service rapidly in the U.S., but missed earlier predictions of its robotaxis operating \u200bwidely in multiple \u200cU.S. metro areas by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n
