A Houston-area high school student is charged after authorities said he brought a loaded gun onto campus at Alief ISD\u2019s Elsik High School, and court records indicate he was previously convicted in a similar case.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors asked a judge to set bond at $250,000, citing the student\u2019s prior history. <\/p>\n
The judge set the bond at $25,000.<\/p>\n
The student, identified in court records as 18-year-old Osvan Cruz, appeared in court this week after his arrest at Elsik High School.<\/p>\n
In the hearing, prosecutors pointed to what they described as prior incidents involving a loaded handgun at a school and requested a $250,000 bond.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour honor, in this case, because he has prior incidents with taking loaded handgun to school, the State requested 250,000 dollars,\u201d a Harris County prosecutor said in probable cause court.<\/p>\n
The judge granted a $25,000 bond, which Cruz has now posted.<\/p>\n
Cruz was previously convicted of bringing a loaded gun to a school in May 2025, according to court documents. It was not immediately clear from the records whether that prior incident also occurred at Elsik High.<\/p>\n
Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers of Houston said the repeated allegation raised concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis particular charge against this defendant posed a lot of red flags to me. I have not seen a case where a student, and I\u2019m assuming he\u2019s a student, was charged more than once with bringing a loaded firearm to a school campus,\u201d Kahan said.<\/p>\n
KPRC 2 requested comment from the Harris County Public Defender\u2019s Office, which is representing Cruz. At the time of this writing, we have not received a response.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Cruz is a junior at Elsik High.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Alief ISD officials said they acted immediately and arrested Cruz on campus after discovering he had a gun. A district spokesperson released this statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cCampus administrators were made aware of a student with an alleged weapon. The student was immediately identified, and after a thorough investigation, the weapon was confiscated, and the student was removed from campus. As is customary under district policy, the student\u2019s guardians were notified, and the student will be disciplined in accordance with the district\u2019s Student Code of Conduct.Alief ISD and our law enforcement partners take the safety of our students very seriously. If a student is found to have a weapon, they will be in violation of the district\u2019s Student Code of Conduct.
