{"id":257045,"date":"2026-04-19T17:31:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T17:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/257045\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T17:31:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T17:31:15","slug":"austin-commission-split-on-broader-apd-ice-transparency-as-abbott-threatens-2-5m-cut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/257045\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin commission split on broader APD-ICE transparency as Abbott threatens $2.5M cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 The Community Police Review Commission on Thursday debated whether the city should expand public reporting on Austin Police Department interactions with federal immigration authorities, as <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/gov-abbott-threatens-to-withhold-25-million-from-austin-regarding-apd-ice-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state leaders threaten to pull millions in funding over immigration-related policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of politics involved with ICE and APD,\u201d Commissioner Christopher Harris said during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal discussed would call for more frequent and more detailed reporting on APD interactions with federal immigration officials, including expanding how the information is published and how often it is updated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am nervous about this type of system because it can possibly be weaponized against the police,\u201d Commissioner Lauren Pe\u00f1a said.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation comes as Gov. Greg Abbott threatens to withhold about $2.5 million in state public safety funding from Austin, saying local policies limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.<\/p>\n<p>East Austin resident Jeremy Caballero said he is concerned about the financial impact on the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want our city to be in a deeper spotlight of funding cuts or getting certain things taken away from us,\u201d Caballero said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/pushback-grows-over-texas-governors-threat-to-withhold-public-safety-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALSO| Pushback grows over Texas governor&#8217;s threat to withhold public safety money<\/a><\/p>\n<p><p>KEYE<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>He said pressure is coming from multiple levels of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are already dealing with the federal level administration coming down on different cities, and now to have the state come down on us, that\u2019s also one of our biggest worries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On police cooperation with federal immigration officials, Caballero said he does not support it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t think any officer should be working with ICE,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the collaboration being forced is something that is creating a polarizing environment for society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioners also debated how transparency efforts would affect communities across Austin and policing practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in a poor neighborhood, in the brown and black communities,\u201d Pe\u00f1a said. \u201cWe do not want things like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Terry Flood said residents he speaks with want more information about policing patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that I talk to they do want to know if they\u2019re being targeted, they do want to know if they\u2019re being overpoliced,\u201d Flood said.<\/p>\n<p>Caballero said for many residents, broader policy debates are not the priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not thinking about money issues.
