The Houston Astros<\/a> added an infielder with major Texas ties Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Houston completed a trade with the New York Yankees to acquire minor-league infielder Braden Shewmake, a 2019 first-round pick with just 68 MLB at-bats to date. Shewmake now hopes his next\u00a0major league at-bat comes in the Lone Star State, given he’s a player plenty familiar to those in the Texas preps and college baseball<\/a> scene.<\/p>\n

Shewmake, 28, is a native of Wylie\u2014about 28 miles\u00a0northeast of Dallas\u2014who shined at Wylie East High School. He then played three years of collegiate ball at Texas A&M, where he was the SEC Freshman of the Year, an All-SEC selection and an All-American. Shewmake’s stardom in College Station resulted in him joining the Atlanta Braves organization as the MLB Draft’s No. 21 pick in 2019 (Shewmake has since been a member of the White Sox and Yankees’ organization). That selection was made in-part by current Astros’ general manager Dana Brown, then Atlanta’s vice president of scouting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shewmake will likely begin his time with the Astros organization in triple-A Sugar Land. But he could soon join the Astros in Houston given injuries to the major league club.<\/p>\n

Starting shortstop Jeremy Pe\u00f1a is currently on the Injured List with a hamstring strain<\/a>. Backup infielder Nick Allen was scratched from the lineup before Saturday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals due to back spasms. Houston’s injury-riddled roster continues to need reinforcements.
