The U.S. and Iran may be in a ceasefire on the battlefield, but the Iranians have not laid down their arms on the cyber warfare front. Iran’s cyber operations have continued against the U.S. since the start of the ceasefire on April 8, according to reports<\/a> based on cybersecurity experts and U.S. intelligence officials. “The good news is it’s nowhere near where we thought it would be in terms of doing damage to critical infrastructure in this country,” says Professor Jeff Addicott<\/a>, Director of the Warrior Defense Project in San Antonio.<\/p>\n

Addicott says most of the cyber attacks so far have been unsophisticated and not from the Iranian government itself. “What we’re really seeing is kind of one-offs,” he tells KTRH. “These are individuals or groups affiliated with Iran…they’re not directly state agents, but they’re sympathetic to Iran…and we have those individuals here in this country conducting attacks as they can.”<\/p>\n

“But again, the effects are nowhere near what we had feared in terms of hitting our critical infrastructure.”<\/p>\n

The most notable Iranian-backed attacks so far caused a shutdown at the medical equipment company Stryker and hacked some personal emails and photos from FBI Director Kash Patel. The Iranians have also used AI to spread propaganda<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n

Notably, security experts say Iran doesn’t have the cyber capabilities of other American nemeses like China and Russia.
