Major traffic and parking changes begin today near Houston\u2019s GRB Convention Center as crews remove a skybridge and prepare for demolition.<\/p>\n

HOUSTON \u2014 Major changes are underway in downtown Houston near the George R. Brown Convention Center, with the first phase of a major demolition project beginning today and impacting how visitors get around the area.<\/p>\n

Houston First Corporation announced the Avenida South Garage will be demolished<\/a> beginning May 4, but the first major step happens today as crews remove the skybridge connecting the convention center to the garage later this morning.<\/p>\n

The skybridge has served as a convenient connection for visitors, allowing them to reach the convention center without crossing at street level. Its removal marks the first visible step in a much larger demolition project.<\/p>\n

From today through May 4, visitors who typically use that garage will need to take alternate routes, including using the Hilton skybridge or crossing at street level to reach the convention center.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re heading downtown, especially near the convention center, you\u2019ll want to plan ahead and allow extra time as traffic patterns begin to shift.<\/p>\n

Starting after midnight on May 3, no new vehicles will be allowed to park in the Avenida South Garage.<\/p>\n

All vehicles must be removed by 5 p.m. on May 3, or they could be towed.<\/p>\n

Demolition work will officially begin on May 4.<\/p>\n

\nRoad closures and traffic impacts <\/p>\n

The project will bring several traffic changes in the coming weeks, including lane restrictions, full closures and new detours:<\/p>\n

Avenida de las Americas between McKinney and Lamar will be limited to Hilton valet traffic onlyPolk Street between Chartres and Jackson will be closed to all trafficPedestrian and bicycle access along Polk Street between Chartres and Avenida de las Americas will end after today, with the closure extending to Jackson Street after May 4Cyclists traveling between EaDo and downtown will be rerouted to a path along Rusk Street <\/p>\n


\nWhere to park <\/p>\n

Visitors to the area will need to plan ahead and use alternate parking options.<\/p>\n

For Hilton Americas-Houston guests:<\/p>\n

Valet parking is available at the hotel\u2019s front drive on Dallas StreetValet vehicles will be parked at the Avenida Central Garage beneath Discovery GreenAdditional parking is available at the Tundra Garage near Toyota Center and at Norton Rose Fulbright Tower, depending on availabilityNearby surface lots west of the tower offer more than 400 spaces <\/p>\n

For George R. Brown Convention Center and Discovery Green visitors:<\/p>\n

The Avenida North Garage, accessible from Capitol and Rusk streets, is the recommended optionAdditional surface lots are available nearbyDrivers can also reserve parking in advance through Downtown Houston+ <\/p>\n


\nWhat\u2019s next <\/p>\n

The demolition comes as construction continues on a new 1,000-space garage at Bell and Chenevert streets, expected to be completed in early fall.<\/p>\n

Officials say this is part of a broader effort to improve and expand the convention center area as redevelopment continues downtown.<\/p>\n
