The study measured the percentage of median annual household income which went towards the median annual gross rent.

Article continues below this ad

Based on the latest American Community Survey five-year data, Laredo has a median annual household income of $63,915 and gross rent of $12,360 for the year ($1,030 monthly), putting it at 19.34%.

The most affordable city in the study was Bismarck, North Dakota, at 15.29%, and the least affordable was Miami, Florida, ranking No. 182 at 33.77%. Laredo was the most affordable city in Texas, with the next closest being Plano, ranking No. 25 at 19.68%.

Laredo’s high affordability ranking reflects relatively low rents compared to household income, but larger household sizes—among the highest in the country—mean those costs are shared by more residents. When adjusted per person, the rent burden rises significantly, placing Laredo closer to larger Texas metros than to the Midwestern cities that dominate the top of the rankings.

According to ACS data, Laredo has an estimated 3.26 people per household. That is well above the national average of 2.53 people and the Texas average of 2.84 people.

Article continues below this ad

Laredo’s household size was the 11th largest in the study. Pearl City, Hawaii, and Brownsville, Texas, tied for the highest at 3.45 people, while Burlington, Virginia, was the lowest at 2.15 people.

By dividing the household income by the people per household, you can analyze based on the average income per household member. Laredo has an average income per household member of $19,605.83, and rent accounts for 63.04% of that average.

After recalculating percentages based on income per household member for every city, Laredo falls 89 spots from No. 18 to No. 107. That is the fourth-largest change in the study. The three larger shifts were also cities that decreased.

Fontana, California, fell 96 spots from No. 51 to No. 147 with a new figure of 71.7%. West Valley City, Utah, fell 102 spots from No. 23 to No. 125 with a new figure of 65.8%. The largest move was Brownsville, Texas, falling 106 spots from No. 47 to No. 153 with a new figure of 73.3%.

Article continues below this ad

There were 36 cities which improved 20 spots or more and 37 which fell 20 spots or more. Of the cities improving, 12 went up by 40 ore more spots, while only five improved by 50 or more, and only one improved by more than 80. The shifts were more drastic for the declining cities. There were 16 moving by 40 or more spots, 10 by 50 or more and five by 80 or more.

Despite the significant changes, the most and least affordable cities remained the same. Bismarck stayed No. 1 at 35.6%, and Miami remained No. 182 at 99.3%.

In state, Laredo dropped from the most affordable to the seventh-most affordable. It was jumped by Amarillo, Austin, Plano, Lubbock, Corpus Christi and Fort Worth, and it remained ahead of Arlington, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Grand Prairie, Irving, Brownsville, and Garland. The percentages for Texas went from between 19.34% and 25.8% up to between 52.3% and 75.3%.

Article continues below this ad

A map from WalletHub illustrates the cities it ranks as having the most affordable rent in 2026.
