{"id":258024,"date":"2026-04-20T15:49:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T15:49:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/258024\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T15:49:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T15:49:24","slug":"fresh-off-croatia-trip-bueckers-is-ready-for-next-step-with-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/258024\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh off Croatia trip, Bueckers is ready for next step with Wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fans joked that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/paige-bueckers\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paige Bueckers<\/a> spent the last days of her offseason in Croatia to conduct research about sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve helped each other through a lot of times, dark times, times when we were fighting through injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bueckers\u2019 trip to Croatia capped an offseason that included attending multiple D-FW sporting events, playing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2026\/02\/13\/unrivaled-paige-bueckers-arike-ogunbowale-1-on-1-dallas-wings\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unrivaled<\/a>, representing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2026\/02\/11\/usa-basketball-world-cup-qualifying-bueckers-clark-reese\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Team USA<\/a> at the FIBA Women\u2019s World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico and checking out California music and arts festival Coachella, which Justin Bieber headlined this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[When] I came in as a rookie, I wanted to gain everybody\u2019s respect, wanted to just jell with the team. Not step on any toes,\u201d\u00a0Bueckers said. \u201c [I\u2019m] taking ownership of who I want to be and who I want this team to be and who we all want this team to be and what [Wings] coach Jose [Fernandez] has poured into me and poured into the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez, who Bueckers said reminds her of legendary UConn coach Geno Auriemma, wants to see the star guard expand her game after she averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals in her rookie season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m gonna tell her the truth. Great players want to be told the truth. She\u2019s going to get that everyday from me,\u201d said Fernandez, who was hired as the new Wings coach in October after 25 seasons at South Florida.<\/p>\n<p>On what he expects from Bueckers in Year 2: \u201cShe creates for others and we know about her mid-range, but she\u2019s going to have to stretch the floor and take more transition threes and halfcourt threes. That\u2019s something that she knows and we\u2019ve talked about.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bueckers has heeded her coach\u2019s advice, but she also has goals for herself in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely want to get up more threes, want to get to the paint more and get to the free-throw line more.
