CCISD police chief defends use of force after Carroll High School arrest, mother disputes assault charge<\/a><\/p>\nCrystal and Caleb West said the incident happened last Sunday at their home after their younger daughter called the Corpus Christi Police Department, fearing her older sister, Aslyn West, might harm herself.<\/p>\n
According to Caleb West, officers arrived and the situation escalated within about two minutes.<\/p>\n
Video from the family\u2019s home surveillance system \u2014 now circulating on social media \u2014 shows a tense exchange between an officer and Aslyn. The footage includes shouting and profanity before the officer appears to physically restrain Aslyn, slamming her into the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n
Caleb West said his wife watched the encounter unfold live through the home\u2019s security cameras.<\/p>\n
Minutes later, the video shows Aslyn being escorted out of the house with visible injuries, including a bloody nose and a black eye.<\/p>\n
In a statement shared with 3NEWS , the Corpus Christi Police Department said,<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Corpus Christi Police Department is aware of a video circulating showing an officer in a use of force situation. As with any use of force, an internal report was generated and the Department is actively conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. The review will assure that all department policies and procedures were followed. The Corpus Christi Police Department takes all complaints and concerns regarding officer conduct seriously. We will provide additional information as it becomes available and appropriate to release.” <\/p>\n
The West family said the encounter was significantly more aggressive than previous interactions they have had with police.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what the difference was,\u201d Caleb West said. \u201cMaybe he wasn\u2019t trained, maybe he had a bad day \u2014 but regardless, he shouldn\u2019t have been the officer sent for this call.\u201d<\/p>\n
The family said they are now seeking legal counsel to review their options.
