LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – House Speaker Dustin Burrows of Lubbock directed the House to develop additional regulations regarding child safety on online gaming platforms.<\/p>\n
A committee will evaluate new ways to promote accountability for online gaming platforms, which Burrows said don\u2019t address what he considers widespread harmful content.<\/p>\n
The directive specifically targets Roblox, where Burrows claims exploitative content and few safeguards expose Texas children to danger. He wants the legislature to close content moderation practices and gaps in enforcement and come up with new ways to protect children online.<\/p>\n
Roblox is a game where users can create games and worlds of their own for anyone to play.<\/p>\n
The charge follows Burrows learning about a Roblox game that allows players to play through the massacre at Robb Elementary in 2022. He cites screenshots from a YouTube video where a commentator lists multiple other games that portray mass shootings, like the racist attack on a Walmart in El Paso and Columbine High School.<\/p>\n
Burrows said turning the Robb Elementary shooting into entertainment is a profound moral failure. He said when directed at children, it goes beyond poor taste and crosses into dangerous territory. The speaker said it reflects a platform that permits exploitation and shock value at the expense of basic human decency.<\/p>\n
Burrows said nearly 40 percent of Roblox\u2019s 144 million daily users are under the age of 13.<\/p>\n
The content violates Roblox\u2019s existing terms of service and community standards. Moderators remove them as they find them. The platform has also implemented more parental controls and child-focused accounts that would restrict access to violent content.<\/p>\n
The House\u2019s State Affairs Committee will study this subject until the session starts in January.<\/p>\n
