The restaurant opened March 24 at 11506 Century Oaks Terrace in North Austin, taking over the former Museum of Ice Cream space and transforming it into a warm, modern, hacienda-inspired dining room. Its hours and reservations are available through the restaurant’s website.

The opening marks a major addition to The Domain’s restaurant lineup. Known for its scratch-made approach, Mexican Sugar focuses on fresh ingredients and dishes that blend traditional Latin flavors with contemporary technique. With established locations across Texas, the Austin debut expands Mexican Sugar’s footprint, introducing a more elevated and design-forward dining experience to an area packed with fast and casual options.

Credit: Lily WoodallThe Atmosphere and Vibe

Stepping inside, it’s immediately clear how much thought went into the design of the space. The lighting is soft, the textures are warm and the overall design is filled with modern hacienda influences. It’s inviting enough for a more casual dinner, but polished and stylish enough for a celebration.

One of the first things I noticed was the open kitchen where guests get a front-row view of chefs preparing dishes. Near the entrance, the bar anchors the space with an impressive display of agave spirits and a steady flow of guests stopping in for drinks or waiting on a table.

Mexican Sugar also has a patio, which extends the dining area outdoors and offers a more relaxed option for groups or anyone looking to enjoy the weather.

It works for girls’ dinners, thanks to the aesthetic interiors and shareable plates. It’s great for date nights with cozy lighting and an elevated vibe. It’s also a perfect pick for visiting family, birthday dinners or any night when you want something a little more special than your usual Domain go-to.

Credit: Lily WoodallWhat I Ordered

For my visit, I wanted to try a mix of dishes that showed off different parts of the menu, from classics to seafood to something more comforting. I started with the Spanish Mussels, one of the more unique dishes on the menu. They’re made with PEI mussels, house Mexican chorizo, garlic, Modelo Especial, tomato, charred chile, butter, cilantro and topped with pickled red onion and jalapeño. It’s a generous portion and a solid choice if you want something a little different from the usual starters.

From there, I moved on to a few of the more traditional items. The Cheese Enchiladas come as three made-to-order enchiladas with corn tortillas, black beans and cilantro-lime rice. The enchiladas themselves were filled with melted Oaxaca and Monterey Jack cheese and topped with salsa roja. They’re simple, comforting and classic, but the cilantro-lime rice ended up being one of my favorite parts. It’s vibrant, flavorful and stands out much more than the typical side you get with enchiladas.

I also tried the Carne Asada Tacos, made with mesquite-grilled skirt steak and finished with chimichurri, pico de gallo and cilantro. The steak was bold and well-seasoned, and the fresh toppings kept the tacos balanced and easy to enjoy alongside the other dishes.

As a side, I ordered the Elote “Street Style” Corn, which comes coated in a creamy, well-seasoned sauce with a slightly spicy kick without being overpowering. It’s a reliable and shareable option that pairs well with the main dishes.

To drink, I went with the Agua Fresca, which was a refreshing and sweet addition to my overall savory lineup of dishes. Mexican Sugar is known for its signature agave lineup and curated tastings, but even if you’re not ordering from that part of the menu, there are plenty of non-alcoholic options that are just as thoughtfully made.

Credit: Lily WoodallFinal Thoughts

Mexican Sugar’s new location at The Domain brings a strong addition to Austin’s growing lineup of Latin-inspired restaurants. The space delivers exactly what many diners look for in North Austin: a polished and Instagram-worthy atmosphere, a versatile layout and a menu that blends traditional flavors with modern execution. From the open kitchen to the agave-focused bar program, the restaurant is designed to offer a full dining experience rather than just another quick stop in a busy shopping district.

The food is consistent and well-prepared with standout items showing the kitchen’s attention to detail. For anyone searching for where to eat at The Domain, new restaurants in North Austin or Austin spots for special occasions or date nights, Mexican Sugar fits the criteria.
