This increase was the highest since 2022.

Now in its eighth week after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, gas now costs roughly about $3.65 in Texas and $4.04 nationally based on AAA Gas Prices data. The Associated Press reported the war has “created one of the worst global energy crises in decades.”

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted amid the war involving Iran after the United States seized an Iranian cargo ship while enforcing a naval blockade, leaving oil tankers stranded and contributing to rising global crude prices, according to The Associated Press.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea passage separating the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, a route that also carries international oil shipments. The U.S. Energy Information and Administration detailed in a report that the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for oil transportation globally. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil flows through this route.

In Texas, the state does not depend solely on oil imported from the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Texas Standard. However, Texas may be protected from supply shortages, but not from price spikes, because oil prices are set on a worldwide market, an oil analyst told the Texas Standard.

Although the state is not highly dependent on international oil, local residents have still expressed concerns. Even though Texas produces large amounts of oil and food, residents are still vulnerable to global price swings. According to reporting from Texas Standard, the war involving Iran could raise food prices in Texas, mainly because higher oil and fuel costs increase the price of transporting, producing and packaging food.

Artisans and local farmers who visit San Antonio’s Pearl Farmers Market every Saturday and Sunday are now having to budget differently. Driving across Texas’ Great Plains or just through San Antonio is taking a toll on their gas budget. Farmers are now having to raise prices for their local produce, as not only are gas prices rising, but fertilizer prices are as well.

One of the owners of Seasonal Farm Salads, Gabriella Rodriguez, who has a regular stall at the Pearl Farmers Market, expressed concern about rising prices.

“We make it week by week, so we’re not making a huge profit,” Rodriguez said. “We have to travel a bit to come down here to the market. Having to travel back and forth does take a toll with gas prices going up.”

The head chef of King’s Cuisine, King Christopher Okoli, who also operates a weekly stall, expressed concern about rising prices, not only for his business but also for farmers.

“This affects everyone in the world right now, oil is not moving because there’s conflict in the Middle East,” Okoli explained. “So it’s not just farmers who utilize fertilizer that is being affected, it is anyone who uses oil around the world. I can’t see the future, so something’s going to have to give.”

According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, as Texans rely heavily on personal transportation, they will continue to feel the effects of rising prices. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told the Associated Press that prices at the pump might not fall much until next year.

Gas prices in Texas are rising again as the ongoing war in Iran continues to push global fuel…

[6
847,820,27,29,28
0":"post-259341","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-texas","8":"tag-mysanews","9":"tag-mysastaff","10":"tag-texas","11":"tag-texas-headlines","12":"tag-texas-news
["GET
