{"id":260698,"date":"2026-04-22T05:23:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T05:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/260698\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T05:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T05:23:16","slug":"what-pearland-voters-need-to-know-about-proposition-b-on-the-may-2-ballot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/260698\/","title":{"rendered":"What Pearland voters need to know about Proposition B on the May 2 ballot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/houston\/pearland-friendswood-manvel\/election\/2026\/04\/17\/heres-what-pearland-friendswood-manvel-voters-need-to-know-for-early-voting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pearland voters<\/a> will get to decide whether or not to vote on Proposition B, a potential adoption of the firefighters\u2019 civil service law for the Pearland Fire Department, in the May 2 election.<\/p>\n<p>What you need to know<\/p>\n<p>Proposition B is about implementing a civil service system, or Texas Governance Code 143, for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearlandtx.gov\/departments\/fire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pearland Fire Department<\/a>, similar to what is already in place for the Pearland Police Department since 1982, Jason Pecknold, Pearland Professional Firefighters Association\u2019s public information officer, said in an email April 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is designed to provide clear, consistent standards for hiring, promotions and discipline,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This proposition does not create any new taxes or increase the city\u2019s budget, Pecknold said. It instead formalizes processes to help ensure fairness, transparency and accountability within the department, Pecknold said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially, it is a framework for human resources,\u201d he said. \u201cIt creates a system where, regardless of who is in charge, the process remains the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also of note<\/p>\n<p>If the proposition is approved, Pecknold said it will bring stronger recruitment, as many applicants specifically seek out civil service departments and a clear promotional process, where firefighters know from Day 1 what is required to advance when they are ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, it supports consistent discipline by reducing the influence of politics and helping avoid perceived nepotism,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the community, that means a more stable and professional fire department focused on delivering reliable service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One more thing<\/p>\n<p>Voters can also decide on Proposition A, which is a city charter amendment that allows notices currently requiring newspaper publication to be potentially published by other means, such as on the city\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>To see the sample ballot for both propositions, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brazoriacountyclerktx.gov\/home\/showpublisheddocument\/29960\/639096040442270000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more<\/p>\n<p>Early voting runs from April 20-28.
