In its final\u00a0nonconference game of the season, No. 7 Texas softball<\/a> looked like a team playing its fourth game in five days<\/a> while No. 18 Oklahoma State resembled a squad fighting to make its case as a top-16 seed in next month’s NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n

But Texas coach Mike White was in no mood for excuses after his team suffered a 5-0 loss to Oklahoma State senior ace Ruby\u00a0Meylin and the Cowgirls Wednesday at McCombs Field in Austin.<\/p>\n

“We were just waiting for things to happen a little bit,” White said about his lineup, which had a season-low two hits and suffered its second shutout in the past seven games. “We weren’t aggressively taking care of pitches; we don’t know where the pitches were and what they looked like. It was us just missing opportunities, because they cashed in on the one or two they had.”<\/p>\n

It took Oklahoma State a while to cash in against Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez, who threw her second complete game of the season. She allowed just two hits and no runs through the first five innings before the Cowgirls broke through with all five of their runs in the final two frames.\u00a0Rosie Davis broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth inning, and Madison Hoffman capped the scoring in the seventh with another two-run homer.<\/p>\n

That proved plenty enough for Meylin, the\u00a0Cowgirls’ workhorse who has now thrown five straight complete games and has picked up a win in 13 consecutive starts. That streak includes a complete-game win over Oklahoma last week, which caught the eye of White.<\/p>\n

“Obviously, she shut down one of the top teams in the country offensively,” he said. “She’s got some good stuff, and she’s going to go pro.She’s grown as a pitcher. I think she’s learned a lot. She’s able to mix it around and use three or four different types of pitchers now. It was a good test for us., and I’m not sure that we understood that or not, but we know now.”<\/p>\n

Texas suffers its second shutout loss of the season, and both have come in the past six games. Oklahoma State starter Ruby\u00a0Meylin has thrown six straight complete games and has picked up a win in 14 consecutive starts.<\/p>\n

Citlaly Gutierrez delivered a valiant performance for most of the game, but the Cowgirls have worn her down. Aubrey Jones adds a 2-out RBI double and pinch hitter Madison Hoffman follows with a 2-RBI homer. It’s a complete game for Gutierrez, who gives up seven hits. Can Texas find anything against Okie State starter Ruby\u00a0Meylin?<\/p>\n

Ruby\u00a0Meylin has thrown five straight complete games and has picked up a win in 13 consecutive starts. Texas gets a couple of hard rips but can’t get on base. The Longhorns will need something special to break through against Meylin tonight.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Okie State breaks through. Rosie Davis hammers a 2-out, 2-run homer that just gets over the centerfield wall. Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez has only allowed four hits, but that last one was a big one.<\/p>\n

Like her counterpart Citlaly Gutierrez, Okjie state pitcher Ruby\u00a0Meylin is getting lots of help from her defense. Three nice plays by the Cowgirls, and Texas still only has two hits. Which of these pitchers – or coaches, who have to keep an eye on conference play this weekend – will blink first?<\/p>\n

Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez is matching Okie State ace Ruby Meylin pitch for pitch. She’s allowed just two hits on only\u00a052 pitches after another 1-2-3 inning. She has four strikeouts without a walk.<\/p>\n

Katie Stewart sent one to the warning track for the first out, and she’s still stuck on 22 home runs for the season. Teammate Reese Atwood set the single-season school record for homers with 23 a year ago, and Stewart has been one shy of tying the record for four games, including tonight. Speaking of Atwood, she gets the second hit of the game for Texas against Ruby Meylin, but that’s all for Texas.<\/p>\n

Vivi Martinez is having a nice game at shortstop for Texas. She short-hops a tough bounce on a chopper by Karli Godwin for the first out then snags a liner from Rosie Davis for the second out. Lexi McDonald does get a two-out single for the Cowgirls’ second hit of the game, but it does no damage.<\/p>\n

Ruby Meylin has only thrown 39 pitches through the first three innings. She’s on cruise control, and the Longhorns may be hoping that she’ll be pulled soon in order to rest up for a series in Waco this weekend against Baylor. Kayden Henry had a hit to lead off the game for Texas, but that’s been all for the Longhorns.<\/p>\n

Catcher Audrey Schneidmiller gets the first hit for Okie State with a leadoff single into right, and pinch runner Libby Jaques moves to second on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrey Jones. But Citlaly Gutierrez fans the next two batters to avoid any trouble. She has three strikeouts.<\/p>\n

We’ve got a pitcher’s duel early. Ruby Meylin is throwing some heat for Okie State. The 6-footer already has three strikeouts, but let’s see if Texas gets its second hit on a challenge at first. Update: The Horns do not.<\/p>\n

So far, so good for Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez. She has yet to allow a base-runner.<\/p>\n

Ruby Meylin gives up a leadoff hit to Kayden Henry but that’s it. To put Meylin’s talent in context, the two-time NFCA All-American held No. 1 Oklahoma to seven hits and two runs in a complete-game win in the Cowgirls’ upset over the Sooners last week.<\/p>\n

Two groundouts and a popout, and Citlaly Gutierrez retires the Cowgirls in order. Up next? Texas faces Okie State ace Ruby Meylin, a senior with a 20-6 record, a 2.39 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 172 2\/3 innings. She’s the staff workhorse.<\/p>\n

We’re off at McCombs.\u00a0Citlaly Gutierrez gets her sixth start of the season and the 49th of her career. The senior has a 7-1 record, a 2.03 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP this year. She’s become a reliable presence out of the bullpen over the past two seasons but gets the nonconference start tonight.<\/p>\n

After several days of rain, the skies have cleared for the Longhorns’ nonconference game against Oklahoma State. There may be a sporadic rain shower or two that drift in from the east, but the forecast only calls for a 10% chance of rain in Austin Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n
