Dallas Police chief Daniel Comeaux says the wording of DPD’s general order on immigration enforcement is being adjusted to align with the state. <\/p>\n

DALLAS \u2014 The Dallas Police chief says “tweaks” are being made in the wording of the city’s agreements with the state when it comes to cooperating with immigration enforcement. With millions in public safety funding on the line, it’s an effort that the City of Houston has already made.<\/p>\n

Houston’s City Council on Wednesday<\/a> approved a revised version of the city’s immigration ordinance, a decision expected to secure $114 million in public safety funds the state froze because of the city’s original ordinance.<\/p>\n

The measure passed 13-4 and comes after the state warned that roughly $114 million in funding could be at risk if the city did not comply.<\/p>\n

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the agreement aligns with legal standards while preserving critical resources.<\/p>\n

“It follows the law, reinforces the Fourth Amendment and protects our city funding,” Whitmire said.<\/p>\n

Governor Greg Abbott called the agreement a step forward but emphasized that implementation must happen quickly before he agrees to free up the public safety funds.<\/p>\n

“It’s good enough to be in compliance with the contract. We just need to make sure that the police department goes along with it, with the verbiage that we agreed to and what the city of Houston passed,” Abbott said. “It better happen in the next 24 hours,” he said when asked how quickly he wants and answer from Houston Police.<\/p>\n

The same April 23rd deadline applies to the cities of Austin and Dallas, where about $32.1 million in public safety grants and $55.1 million tied to FIFA World Cup funding is at risk if Dallas doesn’t make changes to the wording of its cooperation agreements with DHS and ICE.<\/p>\n

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said Wednesday that adjustments are underway but stressed that local officers will not take on federal immigration enforcement roles.<\/p>\n

“We have not participated in any ICE operations where we’re going after undocumented individuals,” Comeaux said. “We are not immigration officers. We don’t go after immigration cases. We’re going to do our job as Dallas Police officers, but there are going to be some tweaks in the general orders so we can line up with the state.”<\/p>\n

“It’s all political. And I think that that’s what we have to make clear to people at this time,” said State Rep. Venton Jones who joined dozens of other North Texas politicians and community leaders who penned a letter to the Governor<\/a> which states: “Dallas must not be coerced into abandoning locally determined policing standards. We oppose state overreach that attempts to override local decision-making and ultimately undermines the very public safety it claims to protect.”<\/p>\n

“I think that the city of Dallas is working with the city attorneys to determine what is needed and are really taking their time to make sure they get it right,” he said of the “tweaks” in the general order language referenced by Chief Comeaux.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Not to just appease the governor, but to accomplish the overarching need that is protecting public safety.
