{"id":262255,"date":"2026-04-23T05:07:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T05:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/262255\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T05:07:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T05:07:30","slug":"handmade-history-a-century-of-round-rock-donuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/262255\/","title":{"rendered":"Handmade history: A century of Round Rock Donuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSince 1926, lines have wrapped around <a href=\"https:\/\/roundrockdonuts.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Round Rock Donuts<\/a> as customers wait to get their hands on the legendary light, fluffy treats.<\/p>\n<p>How we got here<\/p>\n<p>Round Rock Donuts originally began as the Lone Star Bakery. In the 1930s, founder Reinhold R. Moehring began experimenting with dough recipes in an effort to produce a specialty product that would enable his small-town bakery to survive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original owner, when the depression started hitting, started experimenting with doughnuts to keep the bakery alive,\u201d Bakery manager Deanne Mohen said. \u201cBy the 40s, he had perfected the dough, and that\u2019s where it all started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Round Rock Donuts started as a full service bakery, but moved away from pies, cookies and bread. Now, the focus is on the doughnuts, as well as some pastries and kolachies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Round Rock Donuts evolved and became so big, it only made sense that we had to let a few of those other things go,\u201d Mohen said.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s special about it?<\/p>\n<p>While some things have changed over the years, such as the store eliminating its indoor lobby and opting for drive thru and walk up orders, the doughnuts are still hand rolled, hand cut and hand fried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of love goes into our doughnuts,\u201d Mohen said. \u201cWe pay a lot of attention to the quality of the doughnuts. There\u2019s a definite process. A lot of attention to detail and the atmosphere makes our doughnuts light and fluffy, not greasy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohen said the top-selling doughnut is a classic glazed, with chocolate covered and strawberry sprinkle rounding out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people think we\u2019re famous for our big Texas [Sized] Donut,\u201d Mohen said. \u201cWay back in the day, we were on Man Versus Food, and the Texas [Sized] Donut just exploded after that.
