Martinez\/Austin American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>When it came time to narrow down her choice of college basketball destinations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/cougars\/article\/justice-carlton-basketball-transfer-texas-22214860.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Justice Carlton<\/a> had a pretty good idea where she would transfer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First, though, she wanted to have some fun.<\/p>\n<p>Younger sister Madison had recently signed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/cougars\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">University of Houston<\/a> women\u2019s basketball team and was eager for the sisters to reunite on the court for the first time since their days at Seven Lakes. Being closer to the family\u2019s Katy home to spend time with sisters Londyne and Jameson was also important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>So, Carlton booked a visit to\u2026 Miami.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of tricked my sisters,\u201d Carlton said this week after UH officially announced the 6-foot-1 forward would join the program after two seasons at Texas. \u201cThey got nervous when I took my visit to Miami. They were really scared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were all super supportive of me. Maddie really wanted me to play with her and go to school with her, which is something I made sure was OK with her before I committed. It\u2019s important to me that she still gets her limelight in college. Why go from a program that made two consecutive Final Four appearances to one that was 1-17 in the Big 12 in coach Matthew Mitchell\u2019s first season?<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to be a part of what Houston is building,\u201d Carlton said.<\/p>\n<p>Carlton said she felt comfortable with Mitchell and the coaching staff after she observed UH\u2019s recruitment of Maddie, a 6-foot-2 incoming freshman forward.<\/p>\n<p>UH checked off several other boxes: For starters, UH offered a coaching staff \u201cthat believes in me,\u201d Carlton said. In Mitchell, Carlton found an \u201cexperienced SEC coach I was looking for,\u201d with a track record of player development and a turnaround of Kentucky into a perennial NCAA Tournament team.<\/p>\n<p>And UH offered Carlton the freedom to be used in a variety of roles and \u201cnot be boxed in\u201d regardless of her position.<\/p>\n<p>Carlton\u2019s arrival represents a major coup for the Cougars, who underwent a roster overhaul this offseason in advance of Mitchell\u2019s second season. Martinez\/Austin American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/cam-coleman-arch-manning-texas-football-22217596.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Carlton\u2019s decision to leave Austin<\/a> was \u201cpretty easy.\u201d A starter on UT\u2019s Final Four team this season, the disgruntled forward never saw eye-to-eye with coach Vic Schaefer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy actual decision to leave Texas was pretty easy,\u201d Carlton said. \u201cThey made it pretty easy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked what made the decision easy, Carlton added: \u201cPart of it was just the inconsistency piece. I just did not really enjoy my time that much there. I loved all my teammates, and I have great relationships with all of them. The decision was pretty easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Carlton started 28\u00a0games this season and averaged 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds. She had a 15-point performance against South Carolina to earn a spot on the All-SEC tournament team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s got a really, really polished offensive game,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cWe are going to work hard to help her sharpen her skills and strength them, but she is ready to roll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said Carlton\u2019s talent and versatility make her capable of being a go-to option for the Cougars, who this week signed Esmeralda Enriquez, a 5-foot-8 guard from Eastern Arizona who was the JUCO national player of the year. UH also added Kaelyn Hamilton, a transfer guard from San Diego State who was the Mountain West\u2019s Sixth Player of the Year last season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice is such a\u00a0versatile player profile we\u2019ve had success with,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cThere\u2019s no spot on the floor she can\u2019t score from\u00a0\u2014 3-point, her midrange game is strong, she is just so tough around the basket. She\u2019s got an incredible skill around the basket to use her strength to score against bigger players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think is interesting for her, she wanted to really prove that she is a go-to type player.
