It was a scene she couldn\u2019t have imagined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/04\/how-collin-county-is-changing-in-5-charts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/04\/how-collin-county-is-changing-in-5-charts\/\">just a few years back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Collin County is home to some of the country\u2019s fastest-growing cities, with a population expected to nearly double to more than 2.4 million residents by 2060. Rapid development has drawn voters with advanced degrees who have tended to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/partisanship-by-race-ethnicity-and-education\/#education-and-partisanship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats<\/a> in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The county has also seen an influx of Asian Americans, who lean Democratic and now make up nearly a fifth of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/03\/by-the-numbers-10-statistics-that-show-how-collin-county-is-changing\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/10\/03\/by-the-numbers-10-statistics-that-show-how-collin-county-is-changing\/\">county\u2019s population<\/a>. In 2020, 72% of English-speaking, single-race, non-Hispanic Asian voters said they voted for Democrat Joe Biden for president, according to Pew Research Center. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Two decades ago, George W. Bush won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/08\/07\/4-collin-county-mayors-share-vision-for-fast-growing-region\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/08\/07\/4-collin-county-mayors-share-vision-for-fast-growing-region\/\">Collin County<\/a> with 71% of the vote. In 2024, Donald Trump won the county with 54%. Four years earlier, Trump had a much thinner margin with just 51% voting for him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">And just three years ago, voters in Plano and Allen elected Mihaela Plesa to the Texas House, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2022\/11\/09\/planos-mihaela-plesa-becomes-first-democrat-in-decades-to-win-collin-county-house-seat\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2022\/11\/09\/planos-mihaela-plesa-becomes-first-democrat-in-decades-to-win-collin-county-house-seat\/\">Collin County Democrat<\/a> to win a seat in Austin in nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Plesa, whose district includes parts of Plano and Allen, believes voters in her district are focused on traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/27\/dems-using-billionaires-as-boogeymen-but-strategy-wont-work-without-economic-message\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/27\/dems-using-billionaires-as-boogeymen-but-strategy-wont-work-without-economic-message\/\">Democratic<\/a> values such as rejecting public school vouchers and protecting reproductive rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Former McKinney Mayor George Fuller \u2014 a Republican \u2014 acknowledges the political shifts, saying the population boom has transformed his city from \u201ca deep red to a less-than-deep-red.\u201d He hopes stewards of governance, regardless of party, will focus on how to make their city better, not on making it more red or more blue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cBecause we are becoming more purple and because we\u2019re having more diverse ideas,\u201d he said, \u201cthat will drive both parties to now realize: \u2018You know what? I\u2019ve got to start appealing to everybody.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">For Shenoy and others, there was much on their minds \u2014 from gun control to gender identity, and from migrants to health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cPeople cared enough to come out, and it was raining,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like maybe there\u2019s a little more urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Roxanne Frietze, a single mom who\u2019s lived in McKinney for eight years, was also astonished at what she saw at the No Kings protest in her community \u2014 hundreds of people instead of the usual scant dozens.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761751276_658_RNN4LPDD5NC6JB3YCZFW3HS234.jpg\" alt=\"Collin County has provided fire and ambulance service to unincorporated areas for decades...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In recent years, she said, more progressive voices have shown up on neighborhood social media channels. She said those conversations are no longer as one-sided as they used to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThere might have been one brave keyboard warrior before,\u201d Frietze said, \u201cbut now a lot of people are speaking out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Joshua Blank, research director for the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, said fast-growing areas like Collin County are becoming the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/25\/gina-hinojosa-seeks-to-rally-texans-against-greg-abbott-billionaires\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/25\/gina-hinojosa-seeks-to-rally-texans-against-greg-abbott-billionaires\/\">politically competitive<\/a> in the state. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cCollin County is not made up of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/09\/23\/dont-lose-your-voice-how-to-register-to-vote-in-dallas-and-collin-counties\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/09\/23\/dont-lose-your-voice-how-to-register-to-vote-in-dallas-and-collin-counties\/\">conservative voters<\/a> living on rural stretches of land,\u201d Blank said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s increasingly made up of a diverse population of college-educated professionals,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are the kinds of people that Democrats are generally appealing to more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EQ66J4KT7BGWVA2XNOPR757QFE.jpg\" alt=\"Gina Maria Ottavio (foreground) converses with a voter after he cast his ballot at Davis...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The county is home to some of the state\u2019s most influential Republicans, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/health-care\/2025\/10\/24\/dallas-doctor-surrenders-medical-license-after-gender-affirming-care-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/health-care\/2025\/10\/24\/dallas-doctor-surrenders-medical-license-after-gender-affirming-care-lawsuit\/\">Attorney General Ken Paxton<\/a> from McKinney and Abraham George, a Parker resident who chairs the state Republican Party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Still, some Democrats see opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s less about people shifting to the left as much as it\u2019s about people shifting towards a government that works,\u201d said Kendall Scudder, the chair of the Texas Democratic Party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some Republican leaders argue their party has delivered a government that works in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/09\/29\/how-to-contact-local-officials-in-collin-county\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/09\/29\/how-to-contact-local-officials-in-collin-county\/\">Collin County<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761751277_175_6ODXP7ZR3RHOPE3SJCHCY6XYMI.jpg\" alt=\"Julie Holmer is resigning from the Plano City Council to run for the Collin County...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the people are moving to Collin County \u2026 because they like responsible government,&#8221; said former county GOP chair Shelby Williams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI think most people are chiefly influenced by kitchen table issues. What kind of community are they going to raise their family in? Is it going to be safe? Are there going to be good educational and economic opportunities? That\u2019s what\u2019s driving those people, and that has not changed for \u2026 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Collin County Democratic Party Chair Jeremy Sutka, who helped organize the No Kings rally in Plano, hopes local Democrats focus on local policy interests to appeal to a wider net of constituents with local concerns \u2014 not national political flashpoints.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761751277_137_5YFRKRRLCBFINIGYFXD4QN4Y5E.jpg\" alt=\"Kathy Baikie (center), election judge, shows Frances van Tassell (left) and Patricia Hawkins...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to break a little bit from what the Democratic Party nationally was messaging and connect with people where they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2024\/11\/07\/how-collin-county-voted-in-national-and-state-elections\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2024\/11\/07\/how-collin-county-voted-in-national-and-state-elections\/\">here in Collin County<\/a>, a suburban county with families that want to have public schools that are strong,\u201d Sutka said. \u201cThey want to have safe neighborhoods. They want to be able to afford to live in those neighborhoods\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, grew up in Plano in the 1980s and 1990s when parts of the county were just prairies. Residents only put out yard signs for Republicans such as Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and former U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">As a college student, he volunteered for congressional campaigns in Collin County in the early 2000s and remembers that Democrats didn\u2019t have much of a presence. Since then, he has noticed that the county\u2019s Democratic party has become more organized, recruiting candidates to run for offices such as county judge and for nonpartisan local positions such as city council.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/U5F3HTVUAVBS3EMNB6R2C7IJOE.jpg\" alt=\"Traffic backs up in the northbound lanes of U.S. 75 on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, in McKinney.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re investing in getting people to run, even if it\u2019s a long slog for them to win,\u201d Rottinghaus said, \u201cThat\u2019s generated a bench that otherwise wasn\u2019t apparent in the prior few decades. Those people then become fixtures on school boards \u2026 and can materialize into future candidates.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/10\/17\/plano-council-member-resigns-to-run-for-collin-county-commissioners-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/10\/17\/plano-council-member-resigns-to-run-for-collin-county-commissioners-court\/\">Democrat Julie Holmer<\/a> recently resigned her seat as Plano\u2019s deputy mayor pro tem to launch a bid for a seat on the Collin County Court of Commissioners, which is entirely made up of Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Holmer is vying for the Precinct 4 post, which is also being sought by Williams, the former county GOP chair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a Democrat, but I\u2019m a moderate and I do think people are looking for that,\u201d Holmer said. \u201cThey\u2019re looking for balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-subject-tag-list-only-list-only-module__BZO7y link-blue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/10\/17\/voting-elections-texas-local-politics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Early voting for 2025 elections ends Friday: What to know about casting your ballot<\/a><a class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-subject-tag-list-only-list-only-module__BZO7y link-blue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/restaurant-news\/2025\/10\/28\/dallas-fort-worth-michelin-star-restaurant-winners-texas-guide-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Which Dallas restaurants won a Michelin star?
