SAN ANTONIO \u2013 The excitement of a San Antonio Spurs playoff berth and Fiesta season are colliding with once again. The result, local business owners said, is a surge in sales for shirts, hats and handmade jewelry.<\/p>\n
Florence Barrera, owner of Bohemian Gemme Boutique in Southtown, recently had one of her best months yet. <\/p>\n
Customers stocked up on Fiesta-themed pieces with a Spurs twist. <\/p>\n
\u201cMarch was a record-breaking month for us in sales,\u201d Barrera said. \u201cPeople are buying Fiesta jewelry and the Papel Picados that are Spurs-inspired.\u201d <\/p>\n
Artist and entrepreneur Mando Zimmerle said demand has also jumped for his limited custom Spurs shirts and caps, which are created with partners Jason and Greg from Retro Goods. <\/p>\n
Zimmerle said this year\u2019s energy feels different across the city. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis year is just different altogether, and it\u2019s helped push these products,\u201d Zimmerle said. <\/p>\n
Zimmerle said his designs pull from hip-hop culture and San Antonio culture. He often features the Spurs Coyote \u2014 a nod to a team symbol he believes resonates beyond the court. <\/p>\n
\u201cI focus on the Spurs Coyote because he\u2019s not going nowhere,\u201d Zimmerle said. \u201cHe\u2019s the heart of the Spurs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zimmerle said one of their concepts ties the city\u2019s basketball hopes to the \u201cRace for Seis\u201d slogan, pairing it with a racing-inspired look.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Race for Seis.\u2019 It just clicked with us, like, man, we should put it all together,\u201d Zimmerle said.<\/p>\n
Zimmerle said the motivation comes from the community\u2019s enthusiasm for both the Spurs and Fiesta.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all love and the passion behind it that keeps us motivated to keep doing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Barrera said her boutique\u2019s bright Fiesta collection has become a seasonal go-to, particularly her Papel Picado earrings she designs from scratch.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur Papel Picado earrings \u2014 we designed them last year and added that to our Fiesta collection,\u201d Barrera said. \u201cThey were selling out like crazy. \u2026 It\u2019s a staple. It\u2019s an iconic thing for our city. For our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zimmerle said that same pride shows up citywide: from watch parties to pop-up sales and local makers turning fandom into art.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat winning mentality is so heavy on the city when it comes to the filling up the bars. The restaurants watching the games. People promoting it, people making merch,\u201d Zimmerle said.<\/p>\n
For Barrera, the busiest weeks are also the most rewarding.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo know that our customers, they trust our product and they like the things that I create. It just feels unreal sometimes,\u201d Barrera said. \u201cI love seeing people wear our designs.\u201d<\/p>\n
