EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson returned to his alma mater, Andress High School, on Thursday to support the school\u2019s boys basketball team with a $1,500 donation.<\/p>\n
The money is intended to help cover travel, hotel stays, and other team expenses. <\/p>\n
Johnson, who graduated from Andress High School in 1984, said the donation was personal because the school is home to him and his family. <\/p>\n
\u201cOh, you know, I’m a little biased to Andress, because this is where my brothers and sisters, we all went to school here, so I spent many, many years in this building, in this gym, on this campus, and what better way to give back than to my own school?\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Beyond athletics, Johnson also encouraged students to focus on academics, urging them to prioritize their education as a foundation, the same way he did when he attended the school.<\/p>\n
