The newest episode of \u201cArlington Archives<\/a>\u201d takes listeners into the layered history of Top O’ Hill Terrace<\/a> through an in\u2011depth conversation between host OK Carter and local historian Vickie Bryant.<\/p>\n

Known for her extensive research on the iconic site, Bryant shares insights on the landmark site, known for its secretive past and dramatic transformation over the decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to remember, I was the pastor’s wife,\u201d Bryant recalled. \u201cFor many years when my husband and I was at Arlington Baptist, I just started recording the history of the school. \u201cI didn’t touch Top O\u2019 Hill at all because most Baptist don\u2019t gamble.\u201d<\/p>\n

The episode explores the colorful history that earned Top O’ Hill Terrace the nickname \u201cVegas before Vegas.\u201d Listeners learn of the property\u2019s evolution from a bustling gambling destination to a place marked by hidden tunnels, high\u2011profile guests and federal raids before becoming the campus of Arlington Baptist University. Bryant also reflects on how the stories tied to Top O’ Hill Terrace have become an important part of Arlington\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I found a Fundamentalist newspaper from 1934, which Doctor J. Frank Norris started that in 1927, there is a big giant on there that says Top O\u2019 Hill Terrace on there,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cI went to my husband’s office, who was president of then Arlington Baptist College at the time, I put that on his desk, and I said, \u2018I want to work on this.\u2019 I figured he was going to tell me no. He said, \u2018go ahead.\u2019 It was a scary thing, being closed mouth about it all for 50 years and all of a sudden, I’m going to step out and start to bring it into the light.\u201d<\/p>\n

Produced in celebration of Arlington\u2019s sesquicentennial in 2026, the series features voices from historians, city leaders and longtime residents. Future episodes will further explore Arlington\u2019s history, spotlighting milestones and anniversaries in the city\u2019s storied past.<\/p>\n
