The release of a new Roy Hargrove<\/a> album adds another promising chapter to the carefully managed legacy of the late Dallas jazz legend.<\/p>\n

Bern \u2014 out digitally on April 24 \u2014 marks the fourth posthumous release approved by the trumpeter\u2019s widow, Aida\u00a0Brandes-Hargrove. Recorded live in 2000 at a jazz festival in Switzerland, the album captures Hargrove in one of his most fertile periods, when he was collaborating with R&B singer D\u2019Angelo and Erykah Badu<\/a>, his old pal from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The album shifts from hushed ballads to more propulsive tracks, like his early bebop tune \u201cDepth\u201d and 1992\u2019s funky \u201cCaryisms.\u201d Recorded with an airtight band \u2014 sax player Sherman Irby, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Gerald Cannon and drummer Willie Jones III \u2014 Bern includes extensive liner notes by former New York Times jazz critic\u00a0Nate Chinen.<\/p>\n
