Sean Bell (he\/him) is very aware that Monty Python humor can be an acquired taste. But he also promises that musical lovers won\u2019t be left out of the good times and showtunes in Monty Python\u2019s Spamalot, coming to Fort Worth as part of Bass Hall\u2019s Broadway at the Bass series.<\/p>\n
The show, which opens April 28 and runs through May 3, also stars Fort Worth\u2019s Major Attaway.<\/p>\n
Bell also promises that queer audiences will find a connection to the onstage antics.<\/p>\n
Or perhaps, vice versa.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just had our LGBTQIA+ Night last night at the Pantages Theatre [in Los Angeles], and we were sold out to a very receptive audience,\u201d the actor said. \u201cIt is a very queer show in many unexpected ways.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUnexpected\u201d in the sense that Bell doesn\u2019t want to give much away about the show. He does give some hints though.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a whole song about a character coming out that you may not see coming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd there is a gay love story, some drag that happens and a lot of queering of the material.\u201d
Something for every gay, it sounds like.<\/p>\n

The 39 year-old actor grew up with Monty Python thanks to his parents \u2014 or rather, thanks to his father\u2019s side of the family. Actually, the British comedy series was a bit divisive in his family, since his father\u2019s family loved it, but his mother\u2019s family? Well, not so much.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve seen both aspects of people being like, \u2018Why are you laughing at this? This is ridiculous.\u2019 But I do love it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the thing I really enjoy about Spamalot is that it\u2019s a perfect sort of amalgam of enough Monty Python for the devotees and fans, but also enough zany musical theater and topical humor for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bell made his Broadway debut in Harmony, with music and lyrics by Barry Manilow. Here, he plays Brother Maynard and Sir Robin.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s still somewhat of a newbie to this touring show, having started rehearsals last November and hit the road on Dec. 1 with the tour\u2019s first performance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going great, and we\u2019re looking forward to Texas,\u201d Bell said as the show was playing Los Angeles during the time of this interview. \u201cHouston and Fort Worth are next, and I think Texas will be lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bell\u2019s primary character is Sir Robin. Of the knights, he\u2019s the most cowardly \u2014 or, in Bell\u2019s words, a chicken. Robin also has a passion for musical theater and strong intentions to stage a show.<\/p>\n
So, could he be \u2026 you know?<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think of Robin necessarily as queer. I think \u2014 and this is just my interpretation \u2014 that he\u2019s a little bit asexual,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n
So aces may appreciate the pseudo-representation Bell brings.<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cHis passions are not physical. He really just loves singing and dancing, and that\u2019s what drives him. He doesn\u2019t really have too much of a desire for romance.\u201d
Robin sounds a bit like a young Bell in his formative years.<\/p>\n
As a child, he grew up with movie musicals, black-and-white films and original cast albums.<\/p>\n
\u201cI loved Singin\u2019 in the Rain and Sound of Music, and, because my parents were Broadway fans, we always had that old Broadway music in our house,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
And it was his dad who helped spark Bell\u2019s theater aspirations.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad saw an ad in the local paper looking for kids for a community theater production of<\/p>\n
The Music Man,\u201d he recalled. \u201cThat was third grade, I think, or the summer before, and I got in the show. And I\u2019ve been doing this ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later, he would find his tribe in the theater community, and that tribe would help him realize he was gay at the age of 15.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing part of the theater really made that possible for me because I don\u2019t think or know if I would have come out that early,\u201d he said. n<\/p>\n
