Straight roads, wide lanes, not a lot of complexity…right?

And yet, somehow, it still feels like a shared psychological experience.

The first rule is that everyone pretends they don’t care about traffic, when they absolutely DO. Especially at the same 5 intersections where time seems to slow to a standstill for no reason at all. (More than likely, your Aunt Edna is the reason…but I digress.)

Second rule: the left lane is not for driving fast; it is for a philosophical journey. You may end up behind someone going exactly the speed limit. They will also appear deeply committed to it. Not a hair more or less.

Third rule? Merging is optional and depends on your confidence. Some drivers merge with intention, while others merge with HOPE. Both are accepted here for some reason. I remember literally screaming while I tried to merge onto the loop during my driver’s exam.

I failed. Not once. Not twice. Three times, guys…

(I might be part of the problem here.)

Read More: Why Slowing Down In Lubbock’s Work Zones Is Crucial

The fourth rule of driving in Lubbock is that everyone has collectively agreed that turn signals are only a suggestion. Not a requirement. You will see them. You will not understand them. Get used to it.

The fifth rule is that if you let someone go first, you will spend 10 minutes overthinking whether or not that person actually deserved it, especially when you spot them opting out of their turn signal at the last moment RIGHT in front of you. UGH.

And finally, every single drive in Lubbock has experienced the same thought at least once, which is, “WHY IS THAT ONE STOP TAKING SO LONG TODAY?”

Nobody will say it out loud, but everyone knows that Lubbock driving in Lubbock isn’t just about driving; it’s also about negotiating with reality.

Good luck. You’ll need it here.

The Five Stages of Living in Lubbock: From Denial to Acceptance

If you think you’ve never been through this, you’re lying to yourself.

Gallery Credit: Chrissy

The Seven Natural Disasters of Lubbock

Things get messy around here, folks.

Gallery Credit: Chrissy

Driving in Lubbock is technically simple.
