The video shows former Houston police officer Ashley Gonzalez using racial slurs, including the n-word, while describing a prior arrest involving a Black person.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the video, Gonzalez says in part: “Let me get a f\u2013king Black person on a 911 call tomorrow, you’re going to f\u2013king jail, I don’t give a f\u2013k.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Gonzalez also described a prior arrest with an African American, saying she felt like she was “back in the Marine Corps” after calling them the slur.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a statement on Friday, HPD confirmed Gonzalez’s termination on social media, with Chief J. Noe Diaz describing her behavior in part as “deeply disturbing.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The behavior exhibited by Ashley Gonzalez was abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable,” Diaz said. “It is deeply disturbing and has no place in law enforcement or in our community.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Houston Mayor John Whitmire echoed Chief Diaz’s statements and applauded the department for terminating Gonzalez.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I was shocked and deeply disappointed to hear a Houston police officer use such foul and offensive language,” he said. “Let this incident serve as a warning to all City of Houston employees. There is zero tolerance for racism in my administration, and if you see it, report it immediately.”<\/p>\n
The move comes as the Houston Police Officers’ Union, the NAACP and local leaders have all denounced the video and called for consequences.<\/p>\n
“In no way does the HPOU or its leadership condone or tolerate racist behavior from any of our officers,” the HPOU said in a social media statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n
U.S. Marine Corps officials confirmed Gonzalez previously served as a corporal from 2019 to 2023, according to the Houston Chronicle. She was not deployed and was last stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez was scheduled to meet with her superiors on Friday, and while details behind that meeting were not disclosed, it’s clear how it ended.\u00a0<\/p>\n
