<\/p>\nSUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 The Sunland Park mayor wants to address concerns regarding a possible dam breach, telling his constituents on Friday that their homes and lives are not under threat.<\/p>\n
In a press conference on Friday afternoon, Mayor Javier Perea said that if the Cement Lake dam were to break, the Sunland Park community would not be flooded, explaining that the water would flow south down the Rio Grande, which stands between the dam and the city. <\/p>\n

Perea said he wanted to address rumors that the dam is threatening people’s lives and\/or property in Sunland Park. <\/p>\n
Sunland Park Fire Chief Danny Medrano said the city’s only concern could be access at key routes in the south side of the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest concern that we have is if that dam must ever breach, that it would have an effect on access points to this community and that would be through McNutt and into Paisano Drive, which is a major corridor for the City of Sunland Park,\u201d Medrano said. <\/p>\n
Medrano described the area as a heavy truck traffic route and said, \u201cWe don\u2019t think that roadblock will be lifted today, but we\u2019re pretty certain it\u2019ll be lifted sometime during the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials reminded people that Artcraft\/ Pete Domenici Highway and Country Club Road provide access into Sunland Park from the north side. <\/p>\n
Medrano said the city would need alternate routes for emergency services, but \u201cwe don\u2019t see any direct threats within the city of Southern Park for infrastructure and property.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we never saw an immediate threat,\u201d Medrano said, adding that the minimal threat would be \u201cliterally street-level flooding and nothing more than we would see in the heavy rain.\u201d<\/p>\n
The press conference was held at 2 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 1000 McNutt Rd.<\/p>\n
